My dog is home and her name is......

KODY! I played with names on the way home and it just fits. She is very nervous and the bitch that had her before I guess always yelled at her and hit her on the head. Every time I go to pet her head she closes her eyes like she is waiting to be hit on the head. Plus she hides in the corner of the garage. I am not parking my truck in there for a while because for some reason she runs to the corner of the garage so I am giving her the garage until she gets use to me and the house. I am leaving the door to the garage from the kitchen open 24/7. She feels like she is being bad when she comes in the house so she will go from the back yard straight to the corner of the garage. I guess the bitch always told her to go to her room or maybe that is where she went to hide, I don?t know, but I give her praise every time she comes in the house and treats when she lays downs in the house. I finally have her upstairs now lying behind me as I type this. It took all day just to get her to know its okay to be in the house, but I can tell she is uncomfortable like she is doing something bad. It breaks my heart. I want to seriously fuck the bitch up that did this to her. I would give anything to break her fucking face, but Kody is here and she is learning. Here are some pics of her:

The ride home in the back of the truck. She is chewing a pig ear. She is a great rider. I opened the back of the truck and she jumped right in.

Kody getting her first drink of water in her new home.

This is the corner of the garage she went to on her own and wanted to stay. You can see my kitty Calvin checking her out. Amazing enough there are no problems with her and the kitties. They don't care for her but Calvin is very interested in her and the kitty?s personalities haven't changed at all and that is a big relief.

I went and bought a bed for her corner. So while she is getting use to me and the house at least she has a cozy bed in that corner. She rolled all over it right away and had the look of, ?This bed is all for me?? Breaks me heart.

Kody on her bed with her squeaky bunny. She loves her bunny already and that is the only toy I leave out all the time. All the other toys come out when its play time so they do not lose their effect.

Kody and Bunny.

I took her to get groomed to wash off all the bad from the place she was at and she bit the lady right when she started to wet her. The girl was so nice and was apologizing to me. I was worried thinking great I just get a dog and now I am going to get sued. haha But it was my fault the spa is too much right now for her. I have to wait. I have an outside shower and I got some good shampoo and brushes so I will wash her myself. I should have known better.

Last thing, I know this email is long but this is funny. When I got her home I tried out some commands to see if she had any training, so I was saying SIT SIT SIT and nothing. I tried for a while, nothing then I thought about it and said Platz (not sure how to spell it) and she sat. haha The lady didn't tell me that she doesn't speak English she speaks German. LOL Still not sure why sit wouldn't work because sitzen sie sounds close to sit.

Anyway things are great and Kody and I are very happy! Any suggestions from anyone on how to help Kody become comfortable or related stories from other people who have dealt with a rescue dog that is older like Kody and timid because of a previous owner or potential abuse, I would appreciate to hear how you handled it. Oh and she already comes to her name Kody. I said Kody calmly and softly and she got up from her bed and came right over to me. I think Sheba is a bad name and should never be said again.

Oh and one more thing, her teeth are filed. Her fangs are flat like someone filed them down and you can see the stuff that is inside teeth, like the blood vessel or whatever it is. I have never heard of anything like this, have you? My Dad suggested maybe she did it on her own trying to chew her way out of something but they are perfectly flat, even the tiny ones in between her fangs. WTF is that all about?

get a vet to look at those fangs, that could be a problem, rescueing a dog is a good thing

that's great you did, the important thing structure and consistency .i would get teeth checked out. Also dont leave the cat and the dog alone when your not there. My friend fostered, the dog seemed indifferent to the cat. He went out one day and came back to find dead cat all over the livingroom.

you are a great person to adopt an older dog - everybody wants a shiny cuddly new puppy and that's understandable but what you've done is a wonderful thing.

how old is Coty?

She is 5 years old. I just took her for her first walk and she pulled the leash a little bit but when I stopped she stopped and is already starting to learn not to pull the leash.

I ran her a little bit but she doesn't run for long. I think she is out of shape from not being walked so I am going to take her on 3 short walks a day and watch her carefully.

Yeah she is not to be left alone in the house for a while, or until she is fully comfortable with her new family. So she will be riding with me every where I go, which I am sure she will love.

The only thing I am thinking about right now is how the sleeping arrangements should be tonight. I don't want to leave her outside all night, and I can't leave the door open because the kitties are not a loud out at night, so I guess I will just make sure she goes to the bathroom before I go to bed and just leave the kitchen door to the garage open all night. I have a built in doggy door but she doesn't know how to use it yet. That is a lesson for tomorrow. I have doggy pads I guess I can leave on the garage floor but I don't want her to get in the habit of going in the garage. Oh the lessons to think of all the time now, but you know what it feels so good helping her in every way. Even stupid things like this make me smile.

The world needs more people like you Loryn. Made my day to see a nice caring person like you helping out this dog. All I can suggest is just spend time with her and give her lots of attention, I am positive that what you do is going to be better for her than her past. I cannot tolerate animal cruelty in any way shape or form and I think the people that are cruel to animals are the scum of the earth.

Once again, good on you girl, you get a zillion good karma points

Yeah I am going to check her teeth out. It doesn't seem right to me. I have no idea why that bitch would do that, it's not like it would change the harm she would do if she attacked. When she bit at the girl at the doggie spa she drew blood. The girl said it was a total scared bite and was in no way aggressive. The girl felt so bad for her and even said she could tell the pervious owner was not good to her at all. FUCK I HATE THAT BITCH, the pervious owner not the spa lady. The spa lady said she would try it again after some training and time.

Coty starts doggie school on Thursday. We go 3 times a week for 2 hours a session with a trainer here in Las Vegas who trains only German Shepard?s. I can't wait. I am sure a lot of my questions will be answered then.

Thank you Vinny I wish you were closer so you could meet her. I am sure you will come to Vegas soon and of course you can stay at my house. I have a nice big guest room and guest study for your computer etc?

oh she's only 5 - that's great, she has a good long happy life ahead of her thanks to you. shepherds often live into their mid teens. The mental wounds she has from the previous owner won't completely go away just like human's mental wounds don't but they will fade away as she gets love and attention from you.

vets do dentistry but just like humans it's expensive - if her teeth arent hurting her and she can chew food and it's just cosmetic don't worry about it - i'm sure she's not worried about it.

Thank you Ben!!! I spend all my time with her, since she got here. I have been constantly lying on the floor with her, even on the garage floor next to her doggie bed. I am always hugging her, and talking to her all the time. My neighbors have to think I am nuts. I just hold full on conversations with her in a normal tone voice. I know she doesn't understand me but she knows I am talking to her. If fact, she just came upstairs BY HERSELF and sat behind my computer chair. I have tears in my eyes. She already wants me and that is all I want, that and for her to feel safe. I just told her about my post and what everyone on GFY is saying about her. She says hi and is glad to be apart of the GFY family too. I told her that a lot of doggies are just like her in the GFY family, rescues, and that made her feel a little bit better.

I rubbed her teeth and stuff and it didn't bother her so she is in no pain so that is good. She has at least another 10 to 12 years with me at the minimum I hope!

Loryn, I dated a guy with an old rescued Rottie 15+ years ago. His teeth (the dog's, not the BF's ;) ) were filed down like that. He didn't know why though. I tried to Google:

http://www.dogpages.org.uk/forums/in...owtopic=121949 Seems a few of them are GSDs too.

My 12 year old was abused and even though I got him when he was 1, he is still PETRIFIED of flashlights and brooms. I mean he totally freaks out. I agree we should beat the shit out of the assholes who treat dogs like that.

Coty has a good home now

No she came from the Nevada German Shepard rescue. The lady had 22 dogs at her house and a bunch of kennels in the back and in the garage. I could tell she took good care of them. Her house was a mess, but what do you expect with 22 dogs. It was a nice house just smelled of dog big time and it was a lot nicer than any pound I have been too. It was cozy in a sense and had a big back yard. There was no grass back there and Coty loves grass. Every time she goes outside now she rolls all around in the grass and nose dives into the lawn. haha

Coty was taken to that lady's house 3 weeks ago. So she has been in a kennel with 22 other dogs and not walked very much or given a lot of attention. The lady does the best she can and she cares for the dogs well, and Coty being abused like she was and not having any major love and affection for 3 weeks made her crave love even more but also made her even more shy.

The place that Coty was dropped off too was going to put her down because they said she was unfit to be adopted because she nervously bit the person at the pound. I thought Coty was dropped off to that lady?s house (rescue) but the lady said it was at the pound where she has a deal made for all German Shepard?s to be given to her. That made more sense to me because the bitch (pervious owner) hated the dog so I wouldn?t think she would take her to a rescue shelter. She wanted Coty put down but the lady snuck Coty out the back the night she was brought to the pound. I had to sign a release acknowledging that I saw the paper stating Coty was an unfit dog for adoption. I really don't know how much that release is worth since she was snuck out, but I don't care. I am just glad I got her and she is saved.

Some people are so fucking stupid I swear. Anyone with an ounce of animal love in them could tell that this dog is very fit for a home. She needs a special home one without children etc... but my God she is totally wanting love and wanting to be accepted. You can feel it from her. That is why I got her right when I saw her. I just knew it. She was the one. She just needs some tender love and care!

Any suggestions on doggie food? The lady fed her Kirkland dog food from Costco and said it was good for her because it didn't have corn and corn goes right through dogs so it's like feeding them dust. I have no idea what food is best and I want something that is going to help her coat become shiny and her teeth healthy etc.... money is no object when it comes to Coty! I am feeding her the Kirkland stuff right now because that is what she is use to but I don?t think she cares for it.

I've used NutroMax for years. I use the stuff for the Overweight and Less Active dogs because it has the glucosamine in it. My 12 year old has some bone tumors that I don't believe are related to food, and my 15 year old is as healthy as a horse. I even feed it to my 2 and 3.5 year olds.

My 12 year old was abused and even though I got him when he was 1, he is still PETRIFIED of flashlights and brooms. I mean he totally freaks out. I agree we should beat the shit out of the assholes who treat dogs like that.

Coty has a good home now

Holy fucking shit I just read this about filed teeth:

He could have been prepared to be used as a bait dog for fighting dogs. Those scum bags sometimes file the teeth down and allow young fighters to have a go but obviously don't want the bait dog to be able to damage these trainees.

I swear I can't even begin to think about that. Her ears have damage on them and her right hind leg has a scar. I wonder if that bitch did try that. I can't think about it. I am crying already. Poor Coty! Okay okay I am putting it out of my head I will go fucking insane thinking about this. HOLY FUCK! Someone better hope I never ever see that bitch I swear I will end up in jail.

But on another note Coty is very good around other dogs. She loves to play with them. When I took her to the doggie spa she was smelling them and perky towards them like come on lets go run around, so hopefully that is not true about her teeth and the husband that had her used her for hunting so she wouldn?t hurt the rabbits or whatever he was hunting.

Thank you Peaches for the info!

Oh the love in those puppies. I would love for Coty to have some doggie play dates. If I drive her over to LA, or I should say when I do because I know it will happen haha, I will let you know. Maybe we can meet up and take them to the doggie park for some fun! I just told Coty she was asked out on her first doggie date, she is totally stoked! hehe

I am looking forward to it as well. She is already following me around and gets nervous when she doesn't see me. That makes me warm inside. Every minute is just wonderful right now but I am still wondering how to handle the sleeping arrangements. I guess I will just put down doggie pads and hope for the best. She is house trained and I will take her out again before I fall asleep but there is nothing I can do once my eyes are closed. *fingers crossed* she doesn't go in the house. Number 2 wouldn't be as bad to me as number 1 because that soaks into the carpet. Number two sits on top, either way it's in the hands, or paws, of Coty Girl!

Most people wouldn't have rescued a dog with some grey hair. You have to be the sweetest person in the world.

I will for sure. She slept next to my bed all night. When I came up with the leash this morning to take her for a walk she crawled walked away with her ears down hiding from me. I guess she thought I was going to beat her. I cried. I just can't believe something so powerful, smart, and beautiful feels the way she does. So I laid down with her for a while and let her smell the leash, then we went for a short jog around the block. I will do that two more times today. Hopefully that fear will leave her, breaks my heart. I couldn't believe she was running to hide like that. I swear I am telling you all right now if I get my hands on the bitch she is hurt. I will put her in the hospital, film it for YouTube, wait until she the bitch heals, and put her back in the hospital with a follow up YouTube video report. At the end of the video I will say if any one of you mother fuckers want to beat a dog, this will happen to you. I AM COMING! haha Kidding, about the video, not kidding about beating the bitch! Or am I?
