Van Halen - Lee Roth vs. Sammy Hagar

As far as I am just playin some Van Halen, I thought about the neverending war between the Lee Roth and Hagar fans..

Are you a die hard fan of any of them?

I actually prefer David Lee but even I find some of the stuff with Sammy Hagar a bit too sweet, it was still second half of the 80's and it was just a different episode in the history to me..

Kind of like Sabbath, you can see the neverending rows between Ozzy and Dio fans but it was just a part of the history of the band and although the sound has been changing it's plenty to listen to. I am actually glad that they were so diverse because I enjoy both lineups (and seen both live).

Your take?

ANY Van Halen post Diver Down = SUCK

Van Halen + keyboards = SUCK

Van Halen - David Lee Roth = SUCK

van Halen + Sammy Hagar = SUCK

So, to me, they don't exist after 1984.

Ditto. Like em both but Roth the original will always be in the forefront, for me anyway.

I have a feeling it had a bit more balls with David Lee - spontaneous, raw wild thing..
With Hagar basicaly the skills and compositions were there, just it was more polished...

I wish I could seen them live, gotta get me some decent DVD once in NYC..

I gotta say I haven't had a chance to hear him with V.H.

I remember a couple of Extreme songs, but can't really imagine him singing with Van Halen..

I liked both. Some stuff from the Roth era I hated, some stuff form the Hagar era I hated. I really don't see why there even has to be an issue over this. Too me those arguing about it need to untie the knots in their panties. Ironic how all the Hagar haters never bought any of Roth's solo albums. Roth left beause he thought he WAS the band. Sorry Dave the band was called Van Halen. 2 guys in the group had that name and you weren't one of them.

The Sammy Hagar songs were a little gay. Strange, since David Lee Roth is the gay one.

What makes you go assuming that? Eat 'em and smile is a killer album, and has a permanent place in my collection.

Then again, I'm not a "Hagar hater"... as I said I like them both, with overall preference to the original lineup.

So what if they changed their music a bit when Hagar arrived? If they kept it exactly the same the haters would be saying sammy was ripping off Roth. And the Hagar era wasn't that much different because anyone with an ear could tell a song was from Van Halen without knowing just by the first few seconds. All the songs had a Halenesaque quality. what's wrong with bands evolving a bit? Though who don't like that are the same idots that keeping buying AC/DC albums even though all the songs sound the same since 1980. Here's a tip, tryout Nickleback. All their songs are the same too.

Actually, anyone paying any attention at all would know that VH evolved quite a lot during the DLR years. The difference from their debut album to 1984 is considerable.

But no need to get your butthole in a snizzy dude. People like what they like. I happen to be one of those among the group with a wider range of taste that actually enjoys both versions of VH.

Liked both versions - but as others have said...the Roth era was much more raw and kickass. Eddie's sound had a harder edge back then.

All? I only see two covers on their first two albums, You really got me and You're no good, and they did them better than anyone else including the original artists. Nothing wrong with that in my book.

The Fair Warning album looks mostly original to me, but I must admit I'm not 100% privy to the prior history (if any) of every single song of theirs. But at first glance it seems a lot of their early work was in fact original VH. Did somebody else do "Dance the night away" and "Jaimie's crying" and "Icecream Man" and "Little Dreamer" and "And the cradle will rock" before they did?

You're not the one who is snizzy? Why do you sound so fucking angry in so many of your posts then? I'm looking over this thread and it reads like people are just having a conversation.... except you. Maybe *you* need to get over it.

In the grand scheme of things does it really matter what others think?

Who cares? they are nothing but pop rockers... That keyboard shit has to be some of the most annoying "rock" of all time. They did have a couple of good songs but without the keyboards for sure...

TAPS != good guitar (eruption = joke)...

while people like AC/DC, led zep, Aerosmith and others were rockin.... VH was simply not...

I will admit they had some good stuff but they were nothing but posers playing a role to be popular and doing all they could to whore themselves out for cash and to be drama queens.

Lee Roth was the raw Van Halen. Even though Sammy made some great tunes with them, Van Halen just didn't have the same edge they had when Roth was with them.

What's your point? The band was well established at that point and Hagar did benefit from that...It's not bad music, it's just not as ballsy as DLR era.

There's no doubt in my mind that they're 2 different bands. I love the David line up one thousand times more than Hagar... But that's just MY opinion.

I think it's probably Dave's best solo album in fact.
