ISP surcharge for music could legalize file sharing

In short, the record labels are looking into putting a $5 surcharge on your ISP bill that would allow you to share music without the risk of being sued.

Old news - Not sure if that article mentions it but the ISPs have laughed at them for even thinking they'd agree to that. One of the heads of one of the biggest ISPs said it pretty simply, "What value would that bring to our company and our customers. None. The idea is dead in the water as far as the ISPs are concerned."

this is an old topic, which hasn't been agread too... If anything expect your ISP to bump up your bandwidth, as they keep the same monthly payment.

I don't think it will happen either. It's just the idea that they are trying to move profits from CD sales to blanket licensing.

I read that Apple is in discussions with them to give iPod/iPhone/iTouch users free access to iTunes if they pay extra for the device when they buy it. That would be huge for Apple.

A similar concept could possibly work in adult. Surfers pay $x to join a huge video site, and revenues are distributed to producers based on how many minutes their videos got watched.

They are just asking for the world at first, trying to get ISP's to charge this fee to every single internet home. That won't happen, but I think they'll eventually settle with individual licensing.

That would absolutely eliminate the physical CD and it's costs from manufacturing to retail. We could very well see new music released directly to BT and then various services like last.fm used to calculate how royalties are split up.

If the record industry is somehow going to add a surcharge to my bill then I want the spam industry to add a credit.

My Mom's internet experience in total ---> email
and very little of it at that.

so she should pay for Metallica's royalty shortfalls????

and where do you get the jurisdiction to apply this worldwide? NorthAmerica? ya they could shove it down our throats... but there are Many ISPs across the globe that would definitly flip a in the music industries general direction
