A Question For HD Super Geek Shooters Out There

I'm thinking about purchasing a small HD camera that can too capture at 1920 x 1080 via hdmi only. To tape it capture @ 1080 horizontal rez. I want to shoot 1920 an via hdmi cable I can but is there some sort of mobile storage that you recomend? I've shot on the Panasonic P2 but have never dealt with a digital storage device. Any help from anyone would be awesome.

A lot of the HDV cams shoot at 1440x1080 but once you capture them they end up being 1920x1080 which brand and model were you looking at? Is there no firewire cable?

Like Sticky said lots of HDV cams film at 1440 x 1080i but when you make it square pixels (and progressive) for web delivery it becomes 1920x1080. But only certain cameras work with HDMI I believe.

As far as long term storage, my opinion is that tape is preferable to digital storage. How many drives are you going to want to keep in your closet full of old footage that you may want to re-edit, re-encode, or re-author someday? Tapes are so much smaller!

Digital storage is temporary storage in my opinion just for editing and effects purposes. Tapes will last longer than drives ever will and are more resistant to damage. I recently captured DV scenes filmed on mini-DV tapes in 1999 and I was able to recapture all the footage off of the mini-DV tapes flawlessly. Besides, those digital solutions like firestore drives are heavy, awkward to have on set and prone to damage even in the short term. Sometime pretty soon, there may be more elegant solutions, but if you film hundreds of scenes every year like some of us do, after a while you would quickly see the folly of keeping dozens of hard drives in a closet somewhere containing precious raw footage!

Yeah, just trying to get the best looking footage out of a small hd cam. I was looking at the canon hv30 for my shoot from the hip / rambo intros. The smaller the unit the less conspicuous especially here in LA. Sony makes a small 60 gig external hd unit that seems nice. I have always been the guy that backs up my digital pictures in triplicate. 1 DVD and raided on 2 drives. Tape for me is the best solution I was just trying to get the max out of this little camera. Thanks for everyone input

HV30 would be a good choice imo, and that is one of the cameras that record at 1440 and capture at 1920

AVCHD is the future and you can storage them on 100 yr dvds because the files in the native form arent huge..

Smaller chip means worse resolution.
