A lot different

It is like a wind chill factor, but in reverse.

It's a lot different. Neither is exactly enjoyable so I don't really buy into the "it's a dry heat, it isn't so bad!"

Exactly baddog - Dry heat for me is much more manageable than humid heat. When I lived in the south, they called it the 'heat index.' Basically, the weatherman says, "Temperature today is going to be 100, but with the heat index it will be 115." Which means with the humidity compounding the heat it always feels much much hotter...

And no, dry heat is NOT as bad as humid heat...

I've lived in Texas and Phoenix (most my life), and yes there is a big difference.
In Texas I could take a shower and start sweating as I toweled off! UGH!
Not so in Phoenix.. And for some reason places with humidity have a gang of whacked
out bugs! Here we mostly have ants, grasshoppers and crickets with some scorpions thrown
in for a surprise! :D

I guess I'm alone then. 110 in dry heat is just as miserable as 110 in humid heat to me.

Dry heat, you sweat so much your balls stick together.
Wet heat, your balls stick together at about 70.

Dry heat, good for old farts with arthritis.
Wet heat, good for old farts with really bad joint arthritis.

I lived most of my life in New England, wet heat and yes wet cold. Then I lived in Colorardo dry heat and dry cold MUCH better. 70 degs in New England sucks more than 90 in Colorado.

I just came to Austin from Florida, and I was driving around today in my '65 Galaxie that has no A/C. Apparently it was 98 degrees, and although I felt pretty hot, if it was the humid heat of Florida, I wouldn't have been able to stand it.

There is a HUGE difference. You can actually feel the weight of heavy humidity in hot air.

However IME, hot heat tends to last longer into the night. The moisture must leave with the sun because I have NEVER had a hot night in GA like some I've had in Vegas (and yes, I'm talking about the temperature/weather only!!!).

Still, once it hits 3 digits, I'm in water somewhere ;)

I've got on a plane in phx when it was 110 and landed in jfk at 90.

I'd much prefer the 110 in phx, as well as make you sweat and feel warmer I think the humidity tends to trap the pollution in so the air quality sucks ass.

For us Californians if you use the term "Dry Heat". Means you are land locked in Arizona. That dry heat makes you believe that you will have ocean front property after the big quake.

Dittos on this! I am a Florida boy and I loved the low humidity when we lived out in Colorado, heck you could go out and tan in the middle of winter at 30 degrees, you won't do that where you have high humidity.

water transfers heat better than air correct?

so if been thinking the more water in the air, it should transfer that to you faster right? the real reason why dry heat is more bearable? outside of the fact that the humidity gives you horrible sweat and dampness which leads to swamp ass

I agree. I lived in the midwest and when it was 90 with 85% humidity, it was absolutely fucking miserable.

In Phx, when it gets to be around 110, it starts to suck. Anything over 110 and it starts to get really fucking annoying. But it's better than the 85% humidity bullshit.

lol thats funny

huge difference. and it's something that cannot be explained. it must be felt. but a northern must wait for the blood to thin before enjoying dry heat. that may take a few months.

when i go back to NY (where i am from) and the humidity there is only 60-70% it now feels like i am breathing in water (which i am) and i dont like it. furthermore, humidity makes me less active and covered in sweat. my ball sack sticks to my thigh.

the desert environment is amazing in comparison.

I find dry heat is worse 'coz it'll make you feel like you're being simmer or boil in a big pot of heat.

yeah and now that I live in a sub-tropical climate and not southern california dry weather, I actually prefer the humid weather because you are not left as dehydrated like in the desert.

of course, you sweat more in the humidity and have to dress accordingly but in the end it is much healthier than dry heat. My skin has never felt better in my life, I figured out I was transplanted far from my roots in the desert.

Probably more to do with water saturation of the air and the ability for your body to cool off by evaporating perspiration. If the air is already saturated then evaporation won't be so effective.

I believe scientifically that really humid and hot air contains less oxygen. I forgot exactly what it is, but basically yeah less oxygen and yeah the air feels heavy.

Humidity just sucks. You feel like you cant breathe and even seems like your trying to move around in soup. I would rather have dry heat anytime no matter how much higher the tempature was!

this is the best way i can describe it.

dry heat = shade is like 40% cooler than in the sun
humidity (wet heat) = same hot ass temperature everywhere. plus it's wet and sticky.

pretty much both types of heat rely on the sun. however in a dry heat, the sun is soley responsible for heating up what it's hitting and warming up objects, and the objects around them. with a hight humidity level, you have alot of moisture in the air. that moisture heats up and "floats" around. imagine if you had a small pool with a heat lamp on one side. empty, the area under the heat lamp would be really fuckin hot. however the area around it wouldn't be so bad, and the heat you'd receive would be emanating from the heat lamp and the areas it's hitting. now if the pool was filled with vapor or water. that water would be heated. and circulating throughout the entire pool. so everywhere in the pool would have a high temperature.

i dunno, kind of a fuckin retarded way to explain it. but it makes a little sense.
