Going to test drive a SMART today

They are cheap enough to just buy one for fun. They look kinda cool and I remember seeing them in Canada when I went to visit about 4 years ago. My mom was all about the rage when they were new there, and when I went to UVic every kid had one.

Thinking it would be nice to have ... wife spends $600 a month in gas with her bmw 3 series. figure 200 a month for this car and 200 for gas still saves me money.

Your going to get it in addition to the bimmer right?

I know people that had them as DD I also bought one for a company I worked at and they used it for marketing.. We wrapped it in graphics... Very fun to drive.. Great little cars... I'd check on reviews tho and read about what sort of little problems they have..

Great little cars.. Feels a bit unsafe in the beginning but you get used to it.. They are very popular in uVic because of the earth nuts... and they are good for short distances..

I love our Mini Coopers, but can't see driving anything smaller. I like small cars, but those are just too small.

What type of gas mileage do they get? Our Cooper with the base engine gets over 35 on some trips.

Make sure they actually have one to sell you before you waste too much time with them. My BF went in to see one and they let him test drive it and put him through the whole pitch before telling him the entire area is sold out for '08

I don't get that. 35mpg is close to what a ford taurus would get 15 years ago. In fact, I just drove my Jeep Grand Cherokee about 1,000 miles fully loaded with pcs and a ton of other shit, and I averaged 28mpg. I would think a tiny car like a Cooper would be pushing 50mpg.

Smart Car crash test at 70mph. Seems to be a pretty sturdy little car.

The Canadian ones four years ago were good because they were diesel. The gas ones don't look too great at all.

Check out this review in the New York Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/11/au...in&oref=slogin

I have a Mitsubishi and a bmw, will keep both. No desire or need to get rid of either. This would just be the spare car... grocery getter. Doesn't look great for long trips.

Also make sure you lookup the gas mileage... The US is getting the SHITTY versions of these cars. You're better off just buying a sub compact from a different manufacturer and pocking the extra cash OR wait for the 09 Honda lineup, there'll be a 2 seater hybrid well above 60MPG. I drive a civic hybrid over 700 miles a WEEK and we only go through about $70/wk ($280/mnth) which is half what it was in the car and 1/3 what it was in the truck.

You're better off just picking your favorite sub $15k sub-compact. Here in america the smart cars are retarded. When we get the euro ones it'll be a different story.

I did try a Smart not long ago and I wasnt impressed at all...

1) The lever of noise inside the cabin is quite high
2) The way the semi-automatic tranmission works SUCKS

In the mileage department, the Smart also failed to live up to expectations. Even with its tiny engine, the two tankfuls of gas consumed while I had the car worked out to readings of only 30 and 34 miles a gallon. That was less than the 36 m.p.g. E.P.A. rating for combined city/highway driving, and certainly not “amazing” as Smart’s press materials proclaim.

“That’s worse than my Honda,” a man yelled indignantly at me in a Santa Monica parking lot. He expected the Smart to do better, and so did everyone else I asked. In an informal survey of friends, relatives, people who stopped me on the street and even the U.P.S. deliveryman, the consensus was that a car this size should go 50 to 60 miles on each gallon. Learning that premium fuel is recommended was an added downer.
LMAO from the NYtimes link above...

there is absolutely no reason for a car that small with no power at all to get under 50MPG, the geo fuckin metro was doing it just fine 15 years ago and was slightly bigger and had roughly the same size engine.

Ew. This car turned out to be kind of fucking gay. 3cyl, 71hp and doesn't get more than 40mpg? Waste of time.

Research is a good thing.

They have a European model called Mini One that has a smaller engine, that does get more than 50 mpg. For some reason, they aren't offering it here in the States. There seems to be a market for them now, to maybe they'll bring them over soon. While it would be nice, I am hoping that they don't. 2 of them in the garage is more than enough.

Nice on the Cherokee getting 28. Our truck is a hybrid and we don't get much more than that.
