Green Screen: paper vs fabric

Is fabric green screen better than those rolls of paper?

Its a consideration of wear I would say. Paper tends to get small dimples in it from any kind of kinking, while fabric would be more likely to be stained, collect dust, and higher cost to replace.

They both work well as far as background quality.

I *could* commit an area for paint.

I'm wondering if the fabric reflects more poorly and so is harder to work with.

it takes pretty thick fabric to avoid the light soaking through and reflecting off whats behind it. I'm assuming you'll be using some kind of "photoshoot" type lighting in which case like 5+ layers of fabric OR just dedicating an area to paint are probably you're only real options.

How big of an area do you need? there's those pullout type movie projector screen type material that can give you 100" or so of portable screen to use cheaply.

Lets say you get a fan blowing... that fabric won't stay quite good enough.

Maybe those cubicle wall things? they have some like 6' tall ones. Those would be relatively portable

Buy a screen. There's plenty of portable ones to choose from.

Otherwise I would say fabric is a better choice than paper.

it also depends on what program you use to key it in. For example serious magic has a keying program that will key perfect even if the green/blue screen wasn't set up perfect.

By the way Serious Magic was bought by Adobe a year or so ago.

I've only used built-in filters in Premiere & Final Cut.

I think I may be having trouble because of not enough space between subject and screen.

Something I read said 5 meters!? Yikes.

They build a city block with green screens on each end.
It's in the north parking lot of the Hollywood Park Race Track

MUCH appreciated! But I actually have a 10x15 fabric and a paper roll, too.

I was having trouble keeping wrinkles out of my green screen so I have been using paper (with mixed results.)
