I was reading a study, they tracked people who lost over 50 lbs and kept it off for over 5 yrs. The diet that was all over place from weight watchers to atkins but the one common thing for at least one hour of strenuous exercise a day 6 days a week and they said just walking dont cut it.

Congrats - It's an inspiration to us all

Hey Buddy, as you know we've talked how you did this before. However, it's so nice to see you've been able to do so well.

I'm sure the Doctor is thrilled!

Now it's obvious you've lost weight, how's the BP?

I'm sure that had to have dropped too!

Either way, my wife and I are so happy for you!

Or prayers go out to you and your entire family.

As always, I am here to listen or just shoot the shit.

Love

Joe & Zenny

I went from 220 to 166 from 1/1/08 to today (which puts me at about 10% body fat now).
The only change made for the first 2.5 months was diet, and then next 2.5 months were diet + walking (approx 10 miles per day). I'm now doing diet + walking (5 miles per day) + biking (once a week for 40 miles) + gym (3 times a week).

Trust me, "just walking" has a huge effect on weight loss. A 200 lb man, walking at 4 miles per hour, can burn 400 calories per hour - and you can easily do this for 2 hours per day, at a reasonable fitness level, you don't need to be in great or even "good" shape. 400 * 7 = 2800 calories, there are 3500 calories in one pound of fat, so just the walking accounts for almost one pound of fat loss per week, assuming you were calorie neutral before (neither gaining nor losing).

For me, diet means "eating clean food only" - if it isn't natural/organic, i don't eat it - also no red meat (maybe i'll have a tiny treat once per month). Plenty of protein - 0.5 - 1.0 gram per pound of body weight per day. Lots of vegetables and some fruit. I limit calories to less than the amount of calories I use in a day (resting metabolic rate + calories used from exercise). For me, I use roughly 3000 calories per day average now (and this is with a lot of exercise - most people use way less than this), and consume roughly 2000 calories per day. I am within 5 pounds of my goal weight, so I am slowly increasing my calorie count per day to 3000.

Also, I intend to keep up a high level of exercise, and put on roughly 15 pounds of muscle (should take 8-12 months), which will help in keeping the fat off, and of course will have other obvious benefit as well.

Also, to the OP Scooter - Congrats! I don't know what your ultimate goal is, but it looks like you are making great progress towards achieving it. If more people in this country took their health seriously, we'd have a very different population today

In my case, no, but plenty of people have done exactly what I'm doing.

This site is a great example of it:

He isnt just walking,he is doing intense exercise:
Working Out
I lift 3 times a week and do HIIT cardio 7 days a week. I won't allow myself to miss a workout for any reason. I really enjoy them. One day I had to go to the E.R, when I got back home the first thing I did was jump on the bike. All I could think about was getting my workout in! I get excited when I step into the weight room because I know that it's another opportunity to improve and grow stronger.

When I'm on the bike or stair-climber and sweat is pouring off my body, my heart is beating 189 BPM (remember, I'm doing HIIT-I don't maintain that level!) and I feel like I can't take another step, I just grit my teeth and think about my future body. I tell myself that I'm either going to finish this workout with a 110% effort, or I'm going to pass out. So far I've finished all my workouts. ;)

And if you read what I posted, I said I do intense exercise also. I lift 3 times per week and do cardio 7 days per week. And much like him, I don't take excuses from excercise - I got my workout in on the same day I had surgery, and the day after as well

My point is that anyone who says that cardio is pointless is just wrong, also, there is plenty of research on the topics of LISS (low intensity steady state - like walking or Medium intensity - like powerwalking - what i do) versus HIIT (which my bicycle riding is up and down a lot of hills) - they both have benefits, and that's why I do both.

The bottom line is, get off your ass, do some exercise, you will get some benefit - keep doing exercise if you want to keep getting that benefit.

I agree with you I was just talking about study done with people with over 5 yrs of keeping off over 50 lbs. They said intense exercise was the key, that going for a after dinner stroll doesnt do it. That was my only point and you're doing what they spoke about so why are we going back and forth? lol

Working Out
I lift 3 times a week and do HIIT cardio 7 days a week.

So far I've finished all my workouts. ;)

good for you tony .. its nice to see you have the right attitude going in ..

kudos to all of yous ..
Personally i've been feeling very lethargic lately, though I've lost some weight ... i was 215 in Dec. and am now 185. However I haven't been working out other then sex min 3- 4 times a day. my energy level is low, I find myself lying on the couch by 4 pm daily ... and having a nap at around 6. It's fucked, on shoot days i seem to coast thru without problems . but if i am not shooting i'm not motivated to move.
would fat burners help get my energy level back up ? some people have told me that ..

Tony: HIIT is NOT good for you. If you are obese, you are best to do LIIT and keep your BPM under 142.

People will do what they want, but a 189 is heart attack range for someone who is morbid obese. (I am honestly not sure what you weigh, I just know in the past you've eluded to being very large)

When Maintaining fat loss (the majority of your life after losing weight):
Intense exercise is key
Cardio serves as benefit for heart mainly

When losing fat:
Cardio is key for losing fat
Intense exercise is important as well to maintain existing muscle - prevent your weight loss from coming from muscle loss as much as possible, since you are going to need to put the muscle back when you are done losing the fat, you'd be best served to minimize this loss.

I'm only going back and forth because most people have no idea at all about how to maintain a proper diet+exercise routine, and your post made it seem like "just walking" was pointless - it isn't, it's just part of an overall routine.
