What do you think about this guy?

www.pickensplan.com

T. Boone Pickens

Guy is sticking his neck out there against the oil companies. Been buying all kinds of tv time on his own dime.

He's a former big oil man. Big oil ain't gonna like this guy tryin to take a bite out of their profits too much I'd guess.

Big oil has big money to shut him up if they wanted to. People have been killed for less.

I like his idea and I think he is leading the way for big oil. The reality is we will have to develop some type of alternative energy sources if we want this country to continue to thrive. The oil companies are raking it in right now, but will they be 10,15 or 20 years down the road. If those same oil companies use their power and money to work on alternative energy sources like the pickens plan they can continue to cash in on future earning when we have finally weened ourselves down from our addiction to oil.

i think the one thing that people don't understand about oil (well i am sure there are more than one), is that every oil tanker has to be basically rebuilt by 2010 to be double hulled. BP says that its 250 million dollars per tanker and there are well over 200 of them just in their fleet. thats a lot of dough. the oil companies are not making the profits people think they are. many don't know that the oil companies are raising prices, but the gov has raised taxes on them 300% or more. lots of factors at play here.

A1R3K, every time you make a post like this, whether taking a stand on piracy or the energy future, I am so impressed.

It may not put a dime in your pocket, but you speak out because you have done your research, and you know it is the right thing to do...bless you brother!

You are a righteous dude in my book!!!

I like that he actually has a plan, as I posted in this thread. I think it looks promising and want to learn more about it.

I don't like him personally because he is a big Dubya supporter who paid big bucks to the Swift Boaters and has contributed hundreds of millions to Oklahoma State (I'm an OU alumnus).

But, he has a plan and it looks promising. So, I have to give him props.

The thing I don't get is why would big oil be against this? why not be the LEADER of these new technologies adn alternative adn make money from it? Big Oil is complaining about how much more expensive it is to get oil out of the ground now so hell why not focus on wind farms, solar farms, natural gas etc etc? If wind farms are going to cut our dependency on foreign oil do I give a shit that the farms are built and owned by Exxon or not? No. So WTF is their deal?

Its closer to $100m and they do not need to do this to every one of their ships, they had a contract to do 4.

whaaaaaaaa?

Chevron Corp.'s annual profit to $18.7 billion in 2007, the fourth consecutive year that the San Ramon company made record amounts of money.

Other companies have made even more. Exxon Mobil, the country's largest oil company, reported on Friday that its 2007 profit hit $40.6 billion, a 3 percent increase from 2006, while sales passed $404 billion. No American business has ever scored a higher profit.

+ where/when did the gov increase oil co taxes 300%? what country was that in?

not in the u.s., dems tried to recind tax breaks for oil companies back in feb but that's no where near what you said.

lot's of misleading info in this thread.

moreover, many oil companies are investing A LOT of r&d in the future of alternative fuels, you do realize they know better than we do that their oil producing business has a timeline

Seems like a very good plan. Solar power is also another resource that we need to begin to use to our advantage. MIT just found a way to increase solar production for the same size cells by 10% which is huge. I don't see why every house in the world shouldn't be powered by the sun while having alternative power sources as a backup (winter months, etc.)

As far as cars are concerned, I think they are on the right track with the hybrid and hydrogen cars. If people stopped driving trucks as their daily drivers I'm sure way less gas would be used. Trains in North America (and extensive network like seen in Europe) would also make a hell of a difference.

Great post Air3k! He is a very smart and down to earth man. I heard him speak in Houston a few years back. He makes a lot of sense.
