I want to get myself a good video camera (prosumer)

Now, I read a few places that it's a pain to render video with HD...... what's the truth ?

I would like to know what would be my best buy for prosumer camera in the $5K range that is progressive scan..

HD or not!

Canon XH-A1 is a good deal, similar specs to the more pricey XL-H1 but no exchangable lens.
Around $3300 or less. HDV based (tapes)

JVC GY-HD110U. Very good camera as well, known as one of the first progressive scan cams with a reasonable tag and good performance. Lens is great too. Doesn't do 1080i or p, "only" 720p and smaller.
About $4300. Also HDV based

If you can go a little higher with your budget a whole different world opens up though.

I have the Sony HDV HVR-V1 and I seriously love it, I have tried the other Sony cams and image quality is the best, it was the first that came out with 3 CMOS and progressive scan, there's a pretty sweet deal in Amazon for it here

The new sony cams are getting great reviews and the possibility to change lenses and use flash media is really great, however I haven't tried or even found prices for them.

Sony.. there are dozens of cameras priced to suit your needs .. every camera I own ( and i have a lot ) is Sony .. used to be known as kind of the AK-47 of cameras for their rugged reliability and interchangeability of add-on hardware
.. and with the CMOS sensor have seriously improved quality over the last 4 years ..

I would say spend an extra two and go with the sony ex-1 or you can wait til the fall and the new panny comes out for about 4 grand.

When it comes to HD, it's been my experience that there is NEVER enough HD space. I had a quad core with 3 terabytes. That wasn't enough. I now got an 8 core with 3.5 terabytes.. that's not enough.

My advice. Get a machine that can handle it and then get one of those terabyte farms with like 4 or 5 terabytes in them. Because that shit is going to fill up fast.

Big machine, lots of storage, one system, oh and when it comes to cameras... take my advice, try them all out... spend the money and rent them first.. THEN buy.

Go find the thread where I lost all my footage from a shoot using one, then see how interesting they are. I would have never even thought such a thing was possible until it happened to me.

Nothing like paying a model a 1.4K and lose the god damn footage on a some fucked up companies proprietary bullshit system. I can't tell you how much I wished I was on a tape system at that moment.

And to top it all off the cards cost a fuckin' arm and a leg.

if youo are shooting content for the web Id go with one of the avchd models with 3 chips and a hard drive you can get one sub 1K and wait a bit and let it flesh out a bit more.

and there are some real advantages to avchd, like they play right off the camera on a PS3

or an xbox360 (ie no reencoding) just burn to a dvd5 or dvd9 or a memory card or whatever works for ya

But that model uses memory cards as well....and from the posts of others here, it's not too reliable!
