After 1 week Dark Knight aready at $238 million

Already #55 all time. Should pass up Iron Man as #1 movie of 2008 by the end of the week-end. Should smash record for fastest to $300 which is 16 days by Pirates of the Caribbean 2

Titanic. But if you adjust ticket price inflation, the #1 of all time is still GONE WITH THE WIND. And Titanic would come in at #6. These box office reports rarely mention this fact.

I'm well aware of what the top movies are if adjusted for inflation. I'm counting actual $$$. I probably spend more time at boxofficemojo.com than I do here.

One could make the case that if Americans in 1939 had TV, internet, DVD players, video games and other entertainment options they would have been less likely to go see Gone With the Wind. How many times you didn't see a movie you were somewhat interested in and said "I'll watch it on DVD" What if there wasn't a home video market? Wouldn't movies have higher box office?

Very true. On the flipside the 1940 U.S. Census shows that the population at the time was 123,202,624, so not only should they adjust these figures for the value of a buck, but for how many people were there in the potential audience at the time of release.

It's a very good movie on all counts.

Nice Hype, though unfortunately cranked by Ledger's death.

Still, not over hyped. If you're a fan, and like Detective Comics (it's more like those than Frank Miller) as well as Miller's stuff, you'll love this...

:D

So, star suicide = big box office?

Just imagine if Leonardo DiCaprio had killed himself before the release of Titanic. OH SHIT!!!! Nobody could touch that $$$$ volume!

Wow Star Wars was freaking huge! Look how long it took to beat it on the USA list and then think of merchandising besides.

If your just counting american box office you never mentioned that, most a films money comes from outside of america so worldwide sales is obviously more important...

Well the $238 million I mentioned was the US take. So I just assumed that logically one would understand I was talking American box office. Color me silly.

As far as worldwide sales. As I said, who cares. You are concerned with profitablility and a movie that makes $150 million could actually bring in less profit than one that made $80 million. In terms of a movie's money actually most comes from DVD purcahses, rentals, PPV and cable deals so should we count those numbers too? I think not.

In terms of record only US matters. Foriegn box office was nothing before a dozen years ago. Most movies got limited foriegn release to so to throw that in is disingenuous. For example Indiana Jones 4 has made 57% of it's box office from non-US markets. The original Raiders only 37% came from foreign box office. I like comparing apples to apples.

Production budget is $185 million. Most movies you can add 15%-25% for promotion. Studios typically get 55% of box office. Not sure if foriegn box office is the same %. This is where foriegn box office matters. Then there promotions income like fast food, potatos chips, soda etc ect, toys, video games, bedding, towels, lamps other crap etc etc. Then there DVD sales, rentals, PPV, digital downloads and cable.

Now assuming you want the box office to pay for the movie and have everything else be gravy then the Dark Knight would have to make about $400 mil to break-even. It will do that in the US alone. So even the foriegn box office wil be gravy.

Did you know Bale is Welsh? Did you hear an accent? Bale is a good actor. Go listen to him talk in real life and tell me he sucks.
