Anyone else feel like an important piece of life was lost when...

They stopped doing popcorn on the phone for time. Ok technically you could dial 767-anything to get it before. We are coming up soon on the one year anniversary of it no longer being in service. Though if you do call it it will just tell you that it has been discontinued since September something 2007 and they are sorry for any disconvenience.

I loved that feature and I miss it.

It was great when you lost the power but not your phone and we would call it in total darkness to get the time.....

I did not know the service has been discontinued, how sad, they probably need the 767 line for some little Island in North Carolina.

Haha well that 767 is still going to a recording though.

I know I still have a non cordless old school phone that plugs into the phone jack. Shit works with no power what so ever. Only time that bitch does not work is when the lines are actually down. You need that sort of shit when you live in a area that can get blackouts every so often, specially for emergencies or as I learned since I switched all of our other lines over to VOIP when your net is down and you still need to make a call.

Popcorn was just a way to remember. Technically you would dial 767-2676 (those numbers have the letters that spell popcorn hence how it got its name). However in reality you could dial 767-any four numbers and get the same thing. It would then give you an automated the time is message and it would keep repeating every 10 seconds. Like 7:18 and 10 seconds <beep>

Wow dude I am really old and I never have heard of this. And as for what to use when the power goes off, don't you just open your cell phone? The power went out in this whole part of the city the other night, and I used my cell as a flashlight.

But when I was a kid and a teenager and beyond those modern day gadgets were nowhere around. The power was out everything was out, sometimes the phone lines were working and sometimes they were not. If you did not have a watch or a wind up clock you were screwed.

I am so glad cell phones always exsisted
Honestly I only use my cell when I am traveling, yes I know I must be sick. So the majority of the time it is not even charged. Though I do have a cell in my van that is always charged yet well thats in my van.

Ya ok I accept it I am wierd. I do have a few shakeable flashlights and a couple handcrank flashlight radio combo's. Then again I still have some oil lamps and plenty of candles too.

Only reason I brought this up was I was on vacation in a small town north of here. It had zero cell reception at all with my carrier at least. So naturally my phone died super quick as it wasted its battery trying to find a signal. The small hotel (yes very small 6 cabins) did have clocks in the room yet somehow it got unplugged. I tried calling to get the time and well heartbreak.

Gotcha I was in Northern MN a few weeks ago and we had no TV, telephone or internet at the cabin and only one of the 3 cells worked. Of course the one without internet. It was serious torture. I remember way back we could call "time" and as a kid we used but only to set clocks and stuff. Now I use the cell for that too.

Well I go there to get away so I do not mind no internet etc. I just do need to know the damn time on occassion. I can not wear wrist watches as my tire always grabs them and it either rips them off eventually or causes a shit load of pain. So I typically carry a pocket watch, yet you know how it is with packing on occassion.
