Then you have no taste in good movies. There Will Be Blood was also a great movie.

That's sad, if you are unable to enjoy such a brilliant movie.

Since we had a baby last year, we stopped going to the movies as much and started renting alot more. You'd be amazed how many great movies (independents, foreign and low budget) we've rented over the last 18 months. I can honestly say I've seen more great movies in the last 1 1/2 years than I did in the previous 10.

If making a masterpiece is admired by a handful but making mindless drivel will score you hundreds of millions from the masses... which would you rather make?

Actually, that it won best movie or whatever is the point of this thread. There is so much garbage out there that you are actually convinced that NCFOM is a brilliant movie, when it is actually a movie with no plot, exagerated violence, and an inconclusive ending that you either "get or you dont". The acting and photography are good, but that's it.

It makes money. That's also the point of this thread: a movie can make a lot of money but that hardly ever means it's any good.

Nothing brilliant about it IMO except good acting and photography.

What's sad is that we actually praise movies like this.

There's hardly enough info on the back cover of a DVD box. It only gives a very short plot summary. I too don't like to read the entire review beforehand either. I usually just check the last paragraph first.

There are some really good critics out there. You just have to find one that you really like. I tend to have always liked Roger Ebert. David Ansen of Newsweek I sometimes read too. And then the tomatometer is really good. I find that I often agree with it. A quick look and I can see which movies are high on the meter. It's much more a reliable source than relying on one single movie review.

Also, a movie review is only subjective if it is biased. For instance, if the critic didn't like the movie because he felt it wasn't as good as the book, that would be subjective. Or if the reviewer didn't like the movie based on the content. What is systematically subjective to me is the MPAA ratings system. They will rate a movie NC-17 if there is a masturbation scene involving a gay character... but if it's a straight character the movie would get an R Rating. I got this info from "This Film Is Not Yet Rated." A documentary I highly recommend seeing.

It just feels like everything coming out of Hollywood in the past decade or so has been money grabbing bullshit movies. CGI special effects, predictable action movies that have been made over and over before, or the same old sequels to movies that were bad to begin with.

I heard on the radio awhile back that Sex and the City made a lot more in it's opening weekend than anyone thought it would do, essentially ensuring a shitty sequel to a shitty movie.

Am I being unreasonable here? I mean.. I'm not all about the art-house movie necessarily, but where has the quality gone? So many great movies were made in the 30s, 40s, 50s.... Is it too much to ask to make a movie for a reason other than money? Do they all have to be re-makes, sequels, or based on comic books? Hollywood wake up. You're creating a junk-pile of DVDs.

You know Chris I was just thinking the same thing recently, but I was thinking maybe I am getting too old to be impressed much anymore. I'm glad to know its not me after all!

I watched a documentary on the movies of the seventies. They said the problem now is the marketing department controls the movies being made and back then it was the creative.A lot of the great movies of that time would never get green lighted now.

Is there really more crap these days though? I mean percentage wise.

Think back to when you were say 16... When you had all day long to watch movies and anticipate them.

I can think of a handful of good movies from those days. A handful. I know I saw probably 1-2 a week back then, as it was the "thing" to do. Thats hundreds of movies watched, where I can recount perhaps 10 as being "good".

It's just memory fades and the horrible stuff gets blocked out.

Then again, I really enjoyed Transformers for what it was - to me a movie is great if I can forget I'm in a movie theatre for 2 hours. A CGI-filled mindless romp can accomplish that if done right, just as well as something awesome (to me) like Clerks, Full Metal Jacket, Shawshank Redemption, etc. To me, each movie has it's place depending on the mood I'm in. Movies are there to entertain - watch what you enjoy. I love all the retards who think they have to "hate" the popular stuff just to prove how superior they are. But hey, if that makes you happy go for it

talk about extreme, there is plenty of crap going on but still some good movies...

The same can be said about anything actually, thats what happens when you try to make a buck with the "morons" (which represent a lot, just turn your TV in, buy a magazine, listen to some music) ;)

The public gets what sells, and for many of us, most of the time thats garbage - in that sense I do agree 100% with you!

Everyone can complain all you want, but if you don't bother to do a little research then you will miss out on some really good movies. Just like with music, you have to do some searching.

american beauty was pretty original and i'll give some points for no country but those other ones are pretty mediocre...

Fight Club is the best movie of our generation.. covers every conflict in man and society and it is damn fun to watch... the taxi driver of our time.

I can't remember the last movie I went to see. I think it was The Hangover. That rocked. I nearly pissed in my pants when Leslie Chow came out of the truck naked.

TV has been rocking these days. Lots of good stuff on TV. My favorite these days is SOA and Justified.

As for the hype... You can have a crappy movie but it will be a huge success if you can sucker enough people to go and see it.
