Has anyone on GFY made a Shortfilm or a Feature Film? Mainstream?

Just wondering.
I may be working on my first project, my wife has produced a few straight to DVD Blockbuster hits that she's done pretty good on, but she keeps telling me it's the worst investment ever. I am challenged to give it a try.

Just curious if anyone of you tried one out.

I have a local acquaintance who was producer on an indie flick. They just wrapped up the project and have been shopping it around for a while. They raised $1 million locally to fund the movie over the course of two years.

http://sophomoremovie.com/

We've got a budding indie film community here in Rochester, NY. I know you're in LA, but if you were elsewhere...I'd have him convince you to do your work here.

Good Stuff, I guess making the film is easy, it's finding that Distributer to get it out for you. I think I may have that in place, it's just how much do I want to dump into a movie. Just something I've been wanting to do for a long time now.

Nice trailer, should do pretty good.

I rented out my old deli to some guy who makes christian movies. I thought it was funny that they were filming in a space owned by someone who made a living in porn.

Captain Stubing from Love Boat was the star of the flick.

I won't link to his site, I'm sure it's better he doesn't know. I think that they had a million dollar plus budget too.

christianmovies.com

We've got lots going on in WNY movie business wise. Having Kodak here doesn't hurt I'm sure.

I have wrote scripts before. I'd like to make my own film at one point. I bet it would be pretty fun. Plus, it's fun checking out the budget & profit on IMDBPro. Gives some inspiration.

I worked in mainstream special effects for 10 years, and am currently working some old FX guys to produce some small shorts for them. But I was never on the money end of things.

Did you do make up effects as well? Such as creating masks, blood, gore, etc...?

Yeah way back at the high school we've created a short mystery movie directed by my mate who then went to study cinematography.

It was the best to watch if high, I wish I could find it somewhere.

Besides that and my famous rap performance from 1999 that's recorded on a tape there's not that much left from the good old days.

I've written well over a 200 horror screenplays over the past 18 years (started when I was 15). Plan on making horror movies when I have the time required.

I produced a few films.... one of which was released in the theaters. Having said that I can say that films are not a good investment. For every indie film which goes to Sundance or Canne and sells for $2-3 million there are 20 more which do not recover the investment. Even though my film played more than a 200 theaters in the US, UK and Europe it was still unable to break even for the investors.

I have a friend who wrote-directed-produced 2 movies. A very serious crack habit would have been a hell of lot cheaper.

I've been an extra in a couple flicks (my first time as an extra was in a deleted scene in Footloose).

I have 10 screenplays in various stages of writing, 8 horror, 1 heavy drama and a bang 'em up shoot 'em up exploitation splatterfest...

did a short while in college. Used old super 8 cams i grabbed from reuse centres and did all the editing manually which took forever! Came out pretty good for student low budget funding though ;)

was one of the funnest things i've ever done.

:2cents Unless someone else is paying, don't do it

I have two very close family members that are successful actors/producers. I know well the finances and chances of success for low budget, indy (not to be confused with low budget), and mega blockbuster (Blood Diamond, Traffic, Last Samurai, Legends of the Fall).
If you can have fun with a project on someone else's dime then go for it. If you plan on investing your life savings and expect to make money on distribution deals, don't do it.

I see here a lot of talk about horror films. A bunch of my friends and family have done well with low-budget gore flicks that go straight to DVD and get distributed overseas.

Having been on a couple of sets I can tell you that the most important part is getting a crew together that will not waste your money (yours, or investors). Amateurs waste so much time(=money) that projects have no chance of recouping costs. As someone else mentioned, straight to DVD is not necessarily bad. The key, as always, is keeping on eye on the bottom line.
