Burj Dubai Tower

Holy cow, I knew it was going to be the tallest building in the world but 900m tall? That is nuts. Taipei 101 is around 510m. In this photo it is 555m tall. Right now it is 688m.

Yup, the Sear's Tower is 451.9m so 3.8m shy of double.

Makes me wonders two things..

1. How many of those buildings are close to capacity vs empty.

2. How much are they paying the Religious extremist to keep the terrorist out? You know damn well with all that western influence that is going on in Dubi, it has to piss off the tango's. The first major terrorist attack that happens there and it's... say good bye to the tourism dollars.

I doubt they are dependend on so called "tourism dollars" ..

Its just too small country with too much oil and a government that does a great way of image making.

The entire reason they are building all this stuff, is to build up the tourism dollars. The King of Dubai is one of the few middle eastern leaders that understands the oil will eventually run out.

He is trying to turn his country into the hot spot of the middle east to attract western tourism dollars. That's the reason behind all the crazy stuff they are building. He's using the oil dollars to hopefully build a future revenue for the country before the oil runs out.

They are very much depending on tourism dollars especially now the oil is running out. You think they build all these cool buildings for the sake of it? They also invest heavily all around the world in property and buisnesses.

Dubai's oil reserves have always been a fraction of those in Abu Dhabi, and today they account for less than 10% of Dubai's income. Dubai's known oil reserves are scheduled to run out by around 2010.
I think tourism and financial market place are the new income streams.

Someone gets it

And they are attracting alot of business to relocate there because there is NO TAX. This is why they are building all the tall buildings, for offices etc for the big new companies that move there.

Dubai is also a very small country. They have to build skyskrapers otherwise they'd run out of space pretty soon.

It's actually a city located within the UAE, United Arab Emirates. Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE is also showing some big development. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abu_Dhabi_(emirate)

1km tall buildings may be coming soon. The Murjan Towers in Bahrain is a proposed project and Tower 1 is 1,022 meters tall.

They will have to depend on tourism in 20 years because they will run out of OIL, this is why Dubai is building like crazy now.

That would seem the intelligent guess at first.

But if you look at history....insane men with wealth really only want 1 thing....to be in the history books.

By building this massive wonder of the world, he will be forever in the history books.

A "ROME" in the desert appeared from nothingness in the desert, brought up by the great ruler "So & So".

If you look at it from that angle, you'll see he doesn't much care about his citizens

Only in future history maybe Rome will be replaced with "Dubai" & war will be replaced with "Financial takeover"
