Always a catch... oh looksie! NO TUBES. NO STREAMING.

1.2 Although the aggregate bandwidth YOU may use in connection with YOUR web site is not limited by RSH, YOUR web site must be used primarily for the display of HTML pages and not streaming video or video files. RSH reserves the right, in its sole and absolute discretion, to terminate this AGREEMENT if it concludes that there is an excessive use of streaming video, or video files on YOUR web site. We reserve the right to limit the maximum file size you may upload to your server and thus display to the public via your Web Site and said limit may vary and be changed from time to time.

Thanks for the replies

Yea i know dedicated is needed.
Was just wondering what hosting specs will be good for a SCRIPTED tgp (not html text based) with traffic of about 300,000 - 500,000 u-visitors a day.

If you know you'll get that kind of traffic, you shouldn't be asking about server specs.

yes i know what specs i might need.
But i just wanted to get opinions about standard specs.
This way, i dont aim too high OR too low.

Actually what i really want to know is the RAM memory
Will 4GB be fine OR do i need to go 8GB to start.

I am not worried about the traffic.. But im worried about the script i will be using.

Well, it not only depends on the traffic the site has, e.g. you should consider:
- What kind of script do you use? Does it have an "intelligent" caching system? Or are the pages fully or partially renewed every 1 / 10 / 100 hit? That would mainly effect the cpu load
- Do you plan to use mostly pictures or 50/50 pictures + textlinks or text only? That's important as the pictures will use most of your bandwith

Also ... you should think about the fact that you won't have 300-500k hits the day after you started ... maybe start with a "small" server, monitor both bandwidth and cpu/memory use, so you can calculate the appr. requirements for the size you're aiming and then switch to a server that will match this requirements?

Hope i could help a bit

First of all, you'd have to define BIG. You could consider 5k a day big, or maybe 500k a day. The difference is huge, so you'd have to be a bit more clear. It also depends on the size of your homepage. Some people have a huge list of big ass crystal clear thumbs, others have a list of text links.

fujiko,

you're going to want something that has a nice newer processor (quadcore) with at least 4GB DDR2 RAM, and at least 1 fast hard drive. A good host will be able to upgrade the RAM at a moments notice when you need more, so starting with 4GB isn't that big of a deal as long as you go with a good host.

You have different options on how to setup the server depending on your budget. If you want to go high end, I would suggest RAID-10 with SAS, or if you want to go medium range you could do RAID-10 with SATA-II. (RAID-10 requires a hardware raid controller, and 4 drives, but gives your mirroring+striping for data redundancy plus high performance)

In the end it'll be based off what your max budget is. You give the number you are looking to pay for the sites hosting, and then the host puts together the best package of 1 or multiple servers that can fit in that budget depending on the specific needs of your site.

Every site is different, so every server requirement will be different!

Hit me up on ICQ or email me. I am straight the point, and everything I promise is 100% delivered upon. We have many large clients here including:

FRS.com (energy drink backed by lance armstrong)
TrailerAddict.com (large movie trailer site)
NovaLogic (game developer)
and more...

Contact info is my sig bro. I'll take care of you!
