WTF would make my computer turn off...

every time I get up and leave the room???

I just lost 4+ hours of work and a project for school. This happened a couple days ago and it's happening again. Every time I leave the room my computer just turns the fuck off. I've checked all the cables and all that. There's now power outages with anything else. Anyone heard anything like this???

Power supply is going out. It's either A) old, B) really old, or C) over worked and is having mild heart attacks.

By "leave the room" do you mean to sleep or some extended period? If you're using Windows check the power management settings in control panel, perhaps it thinks you have a laptop. :D

BTW, I'd recommend you buy a UPS anyway. The cheap ones (<$200) won't provide power for long in the event of a total failure, but they'll catch those sub-second dips and glitches which are usually enough to reset your machine.

Ya that sounds about right. This computer is fairly old since I built it. This shit also only has happened when I've been running multiple programs like photoshop, dreamweaver, ftp programs, multiple browsers, instant messengers, and whatever else...

check your settings to make sure something didn't turn your power savings on, i had that happen accidently, didn't know why the fuck every time i'd leave my computer for longer then 30 mins it would just shut off...

Leave the room meaning going to the bathroom or doing something else for 5 minutes or something. I have surge protection but no UPS. My settings are all good. I'm A+ certified(years ago) but this just has me at a loss.

Not that this will help. But apple itunes turns off my computer when I'm downloading certain TV episodes. I have no idea why but it took me a while to figure out.

The leaving the room and crashing could just be coincidence. It probably is.

It's probably the power supply like mentioned, but could be a heat issue too. Check that the processor fan is spinning and the heatsink is not completely gummed up with dust and crap. Your motherboard probably came with monitoring software you can install to check the heat too.

It might be a good idea for anyone that is having this problem to look in your closets and under the sink, if you see anything that resembles this at all

that used to happen to me all the time when I had two monitors hooked up, it was an overheating thing with the graphic card, if I used only one monitor things were ok

computers like to shut themselves off when they get too hot rather than stay on and burn out

could also be the RAM fucked (would be a BSOD with IRQL messages) or the GFX card overheating

also potentially the CPU

if it only shuts off when you leave, then it's the screen saver fucking something up. If it were a heating problem, it would shut down even when you were sitting there

Your computer just doesn't like you anymore. Happened to me once so I caved it's cpu in with a sledge hammer and I never had problems with it after that

Don't fuck around with a power supply if you even think it "may" be bad. I had my entire computer get fried a few years ago because of a bad power supply. It went bad out of the blue so I had no real warning, but it pretty much fried every component in my computer when it died.

yea I lost a $400 vid card & two hard drives. Along with a sound card and TV card. Never tested the mobo but I assume it was fried as well. What really sucked was the fact I thought I was being safe and using a second HD to back up my data. well that didn't work so well because both HD's got fried.

Surge protection may help save your components in the event of a lightning strike 5 miles away, but it's not going to stop your computer rebooting when a local substation switches in a heavy load that causes your voltage to droop for 500 milliseconds until the gen catches up... get a UPS, it's cheap insurance.

One time I had FOUR power dips within a minute, the UPS took care of it all... with each subsequent dip it kept me on battery power for a few seconds longer each time, so it wasn't constantly switching in and out.

(This may have nothing to do with your prob, I'm just advocating a UPS as part of your normal setup and usage strategy. Regular saving of work should also be a part of that. )

If you are using an acer or a toshiba laptop there is a chance that it gets overheated and turns off itself because of that. Run some tests and if so buy a special fan to put under your laptop. They cost about 30$.

Check your windows update schedule. You might be running it daily. I have mine set to weekly, and sometimes I wake up to a powerless computer that has been updated.
