A friend and I got into a discussion in class the other day and I mentioned that a good way to make some decent pocket money while your in college if your a fast typer is to do some writting for an online company. However one thing we both couldn't agree upon was how much they were paid. Also does the job pay more if you work for a company that has paysites or work for independant blogs? Just kinda curious is all.

Depends. I have seen text as high has 22$ per 300 words. and as low as 8 dollars for 150.

First, you have to be a GOOD writer. Being a fast typer is secondary and not nearly as important as having serious writing skills.

Second, if you're in it ONLY to make a fast buck chances are you will not get too far, and it is not likely that you will land the BIG clients willing to pay you the BIG bucks.

Third, it's essential that you have solid knowledge of the industry you are writing for. Thus, being a good writer is not always enough. If you don't know about adult and you want to write text for a porn paysite, I suggest you do some thorough research first.

Fourth, you must have a solid reputation in the industry for being trustworthy, reliable, and able to meet deadlines. References always help.

And finally, for copywriting needs in the adult industry, you need look no further than Adult Copywriters.

Independent will be covered by the spell checker also.

Time is money, and you will want to charge based on how long it takes you to write something. If you write quickly, you can produce more text, but the quality will be diminished. If you write slowly and thoughtfully, you will produce less text, but the quality will be much better.

There are also other variables on which you can base your price, such as the topic matter, the requested completion date, and the size of the order. It'd be a good idea that, once you establish yourself as a writer if you so choose, to let your potential clients know that you charge on a per project basis rather than a fixed dollar amount per post, per review, per article, or for however many words of text.

This will allow you flexibility in your pricing, and you can increase or decrease your prices according to your personal circumstances.

I don't think there is really such a thing as "normally." There are outsource companies out there doing text as low as $0.50 - $1.00 for a block of 100 words. I'm sometimes shocked at the counter-offers I get when quoting a potential new client. Sometimes the figures they claim to be able to get "elsewhere" seem too low to be true.

Another thing to consider is that while some projects, for example writing blog entries based on FHGs, can be pretty fast because you really only have to look at some pictures or a short video clip before writing, many projects don't work that way. I could write a 400 word blog entry at a much lower rate than a 400 word site review because reviews take far more time and preparation. Rather than quoting based on a number of words, I give custom quotes based on the amount of time it will take as Sands mentioned above.

One word of caution, you can easily get yourself stuck working for what equates to very low per-hour rates if you can't accurately determine how long a project will take you. You might think $2 per blog entry sounds reasonable (and certainly your clients will insist that it is!), but if it takes you 15 or 20 minutes per entry, that's ~$6/hour, probably not a rate most US based writers could be comfortable with.
