So... should I get a MacBook?

Been tempted by it for a year now. Apple.com is giving the old white ones away for $999 which is the one I'm aiming for.

I really don't like the new ones because of the over glossy displays.

Those using the macbooks:

- how well does XP run on them via Bootcamp?
- does Adobe software run better on Leopard than XP?
- exactly WHY do you prefer Apple to traditional laptops?

I am a recent Mac convert. I've been using Windows as a desktop forever (even though I'm a Linux geek at heart and only use Windows because of the applications I was using).

To get my feet wet, I bought a cheap Mac Mini and used that for a month. I figured if I didn't like the Mac I could always give it to my programmers or put it in my theater room. After using it for 3-4 weeks, I'm sold on Mac

Why I like the Mac

1. It's more stable. One application crashing doesn't lock up the entire box
2. It's got a Linux (BSD) backend so I get the best of both worlds
3. It's faster
4. It's easier to use (and I'm a power user and serious computer geek)
5. It just "feels" smoother to me (hard to explain)
6. I have as much or as little control as I want

My new Macbook Pro arrives on Monday

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/irony/mac...ook-317060.php is how well Vista runs on a Macbook Pro.. XP runs great on it as well.. pretty logical as a Macbook is a notebook just like any other..except for the much better build quality of Apple products..

Adobe software runs great

I like my Macs better not be course they are Macs but be course they run OSX..

XP runs just fine on my Macbook
Adobe software runs just as well (CS3, that is) on Leopard now, imho better, than on XP and it isn't so sluggish when you are doing a lot at once in the application.
I like Apple because I am tired of Windows... When I had Windows computers, I was always replacing my harddrive once or twice a year... XP is horrible on the harddrive, the file system is so outdated and the OS is almost 9 years old. Anyone serious about computing should get a mac. sure it doesn't play games without bootcamp / windows or using cross over, but it's a great work machine and there is plenty of software out there that you can use that is equal to or better... the interface and ease of use is just phenomenal. It's a great investment. And my final case in point is, if you aren't ready to jump to Linux, grab a mac, it's the closest thing you are going to get

I love em. I just donated my old 1.25 GHz MacBook Pro that I've had for maybe 5 years. That sucker was indestructible. It took several hits to the body and screen that would have shattered a plastic case, but just left small dents. For that reason alone, I'd say save up the extra $300 for the 13" aluminum MacBook. You'll also get WAY better graphics processing, and a better CPU--your investment will last longer and you'll actually be able to play games at a respectable framerate.

I actually installed a full retail copy of OSX that I purchased specifically for this purpose. Full updates from Apple.

I am a big Apple fan, but am disgusted by the fact that a Mac Desktop costs 4 times as much as a comparable PC. Hell, you can buy the same exact parts and build an identical machine. I have a hacked Quad Core HP PC that cost $699, I also have the $3k plus Mac Pro with similar specs.

Plenty of info how here. There are people making custom installs for specific computers. The new ultra portable notebooks seem to be popular:

Just a small correction, BSD is not Linux, its UNIX which is even better. You forgot the added benefit of not having to babysit your computer everyday making sure you have all the latest patches, etc.
