I'm in the market too. What number of lumens should I be looking for to get a great picture?

It will look like anything else at 1080i.

The bluray puts out 1080p, but since your projector cant do that, it will output 1080i. Which looks only slightly worse than 1080p, there isnt much difference to be seen unless you see them side by side.

Any bluray player will have component video output (which will only do 1080i max) and you can get a component to vga adapter, which you probably came with that projector anyway.

I had a DLP projector 7 years ago, and a 120" screen. Back when the shit cost much much more than it does now.

oki u def know your jig on this issue good stuff thanks.

so i did some hardcore research over the past couples days and it kind of couples with what i was told before.

blue ray caps at 1080p i think.

VGA is capable of HD quality, the difference now is that blue ray and many HD channels on tv are HDCP encryption.

if blue ray were to show it would cap on my 1080i (max my projector can do)

now with anologue you cannot play HDCP encrypted media (blue ray/Digital HD channels)

so you need a transcoder to bypass that.

once you do that you can have full 1080i on my projector.

PS if you try to play HDCP encryption without DVI or HDMI which is set to pick up the encrypted signal it will half my 1080i.

also you cannot just have a VGA > HDM > BLUERAY connector. the HDCP encryption reads all the way down the line and thats why you need a transcoder.

I just did an install with a 720p projector and blue ray player. Works without any problem. Drywall guy drove a screw through my HDMI cable so I ended up running it with component. I was going to pull a new one, but it looks perfect with the component cables.
