How many businesses have gone out of business in your area?

In my area I am aware of around a dozen businesses that have gone out of business since these difficult economic times have been upon us. Some other businesses have layed off as much as half of their employees and others have cut off all benefits they had in place. Some of them have been in business for fifty years or more. Is this happening all across the country?

well by me linens and things and circuit city are gone. There was this cool book/cd store they are gone and I see more and more empty spaces in strip malls as I drive around.

I am not aware of any restaurants going out of business in my area, the ones I am aware of are manufacturing type companies which may lead to restaurants going out of business as well as other service types of business.

well, I'm in Canada, but seeing as The Source is owned by Circuit City that will mean that those stores will more than likely be fucked. One that is going out of business for sure is Linens and Things..

In the small town I live there hasn't been anything I know of, but about 20 miles away is a major city and they have Circuit City closing and the news was just saying how one of the major malls that has been around since before I was born will be entering into bankruptcy. However, in fairness, the mall over the last few years has spent 10's of millions on renovations, a huge new parking garage and tons of remodeling and then the recession hit. Had they stayed how they previously were they may not have had the problems.

I live in San Diego and we have so many businesses go under. Many of them were small mom & pop shops that opened up when the housing bubble was growing. Now they are closing left and right. Restaurants are cutting hours or just closing altogether. We also have many big companies closing as well. The mall by my house looks empty with so many "For Rent" signs in the windows. Sad

Yeah, but why would anyone want to buy CD's? They would have to close down sooner or later anyway.

I have a feeling that every store that doesn't provide an essential product or service, is going to have a very rough few years.

I'm on the East Coast and I'm on the road quite a bit and I have seen over 75 different buisnesses close in the last 6 months alone and I have talked to several people I know that are in business for themselves (not online) that are talking about shutting down..........I have to say things are tougher now than I can ever remember and I'm 45..................

That's the problem. We should have been like this all along. 55 department stores in a mall makes no fucking sense. No one is ever in them to begin with. I dunno this may be good for the world.

Get back to basics.
