Just ignore GatorB, he isn't very smart and really not worth arguing about. His "logic" is flawed, much like his mind. Good discussion everyone else though.

There's a difference between stopping polution for it's own sake, or using global warming as a scare tactic and sales ploy to lead frightened people around by the nose. I believe in a clean world. I don't believe in misleading the masses in what amounts to worldwide fraud in order to get money. These days you can't get a grant as a scientist unless it has somethign to do with global warming. Think that's for scientific reasons, or political ones? Consider the source and realize that the global warming scam they're trying to pass off to people is just that, a scam. Has nothing to do with science and truth, and everything to do with political leverage and the money-making machine.

Not wanting to see our economy destroyed and our government engage in a variety massive socialist boondoggles to fix a problem which does not even exist hardly makes her a shill for the oil companies. While I am well aware that you are an idiot and a liar the idea that you would attack someone else for not being logically consistent really takes the prize.

More IDIOTS, according to the cykoe6, Warchild ( change your location to Vancouver, BC ...) and other so called successfull business people ...

Sea level could rise by 150cm, US scientists warn

A breaking ice shelf in Antarctica ... many scientists fear the world is close to a tipping point. Jim Elliott/British Antarctic Survey/AP

Quote:
Sea level rise due to global warming will "substantially exceed" official UN projections and could top 150cm by the end of the century, according to a report from the US Geological Survey on the risks of abrupt climate change. Such a rise would be catastrophic, seeing hundreds of millions of people affected by flooding.

Many scientists now fear the warming world is on the verge of "tipping points", in which climate change and its effects accelerate rapidly. The science is evolving quickly and the new report updates the most recent findings of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which was released in 2007.

Some observers have called for an update of the science before the UN talks on a global deal on greenhouse gases emissions reach their finale in December 2009. The US report considers four scenarios for abrupt change, and delivers bad news on two.

On sea level, the report found models used by the IPCC in 2007 do not take into account recent information on how fast glaciers slide into the oceans, particularly from Greenland and the West Antarctic ice sheets. The report says the south western states of the US will enter a "permanent drought state".

rest of articles here for the non-nayers
Is it nature only ? or man-made only ? or both ? Nobody can be 100% affirmative... but people should think about doing what has to be done in respect to diminishing the risk....

If my servers are up and running since a year, and if since a year I have been peeing in the tub ... well, even tough I cannot prove that peeing in the tub is directly responsible for the uptime, I will pee in the tub so I have all chances on my side....

And the GW problem is now more caused by China and India, so keep your USA flag in your top drawer for other occasions ...

i'm sorry, WHEN it gets hotter. I used if incorrectly.

If you want a look at how humans are affecting the enviroment, you can look at how transportation has made it easier for cross-species-contamination of other eco-domes.

you can look at pesticides and bees! this is the tip of the proverbial iceberg when it comes down to it. The earth has been here for a long time with it's own order. Our civilization is obviously having an impact on that natural order. I agree with you that we don't know the reason of the global fluctuations, but i also think that these seemingly inconsequential actions on our part can grow into something that is completely out of our control, and directly into mother nature.

we dump co2 into the atmosphere, it screws shit up. mother nature has shown that it fixes itself by covering everything with ice, and starting over. humanity has survived this before..

4 things are facts:
1. The earth is getting warmer
2. CO2 traps heat
3. CO2 have increased by huge numbers
4. The increase in CO2 is man made

Climate change comes naturally, but still we have influence in it today.

Well you mentioned Timothy Ball but didn't mention he is an oil industry consultant. This source you quoted more than once is a little suspect and among all of his clams this one is priceless: "A warmer Canada would improve our lives in these and other ways too numerous to list. Global warming? Let's hope so". After working as a sales rep in the ag industry for several years its common knowledge that the crops we currently grow can only do so with the these yields at our current temperatures, and if the average temperature fluctuates more than 2-3C yields will plummet. "A warmer Canada would improve our lives..." pewk... this kind of stupidity is astonishing from someone claiming to be a climatologist.

The other thing I was wondering was about the article on Mars warming. If the sun was in fact responsible for the "global" warming on Mars would it not be "global" warming not just in the southern pole. Does anyone else have and links to other Mars warming articles?

Yea. I'll just quote STB. He saves forests and shit, after all, and summed it up rather nicely.

But you skip the national geographic (which is still a trusted source as far as I'm aware) and several other accredited scientists to pick the one who MIGHT be questionable. Ok

There's a lot more involved in climate change on earth than just co2 in the atmosphere, and in fact, co2 is not even the most important (or even the most effective) greenhouse gas. That would be methane.

Things like where the earth is in it's rotation around the sun, or planetary wobbles known as Milankovich cycles can have dramatic effects on climate for tens or hundreds of thousands of years, by altering the amount of heat recieved from the sun. More than anything, these cycles can effect how carbon is stored on the planet. When carbon is released into the atmosphere it quickly combines with oxygen to create carbon dioxide gas. This mass of carbon dioxide can work to either warm or cool the planet (think of it like one of those warm/cool bags). It can go from a large biomass like a forest, into the atmosphere, and from there into the ocean. It's more the distribution of carbon that is the controlling factor in climate.

All that being said.... since we dump 6 billion cubic tons of carbon into the atmosphere, and they can find only 3 billion..where's the rest? Well sudden growth of the rainforests has been a side-effect of carbon-dioxide rich atmospheric conditions, and it's been shown that they've absorbed upwards of 3 billion cubic tons per year of carbon dioxide and effectively used it to fuel growth (we all remember grade school, plants live on carbon dioxide and throw off oxygen as waste). Destroying those rainforests is bad, but in essense, the earth is a closed system capable of dealing with dramatic increases in carbon dioxide. There's enough carbon/methane trapped in the earth itself to turn the planet into a waste, and it's also been shown that it has happened before, if memory serves correctly about 55 million years ago.

We as humans don't help the situation... polluting and destroying the environment is not ok. But let's be honest here, there's no way all the panic about what we're doing is justified, nor is it worth all the billions of dollars poured into the coffers of those on the global warming soap box.. would all that money/time/effort not better have been spent teaching people better earth husbandry and doing it for the reason of having a clean planet? People don't learn well while panicked. They fall to desperate measures, trying to fix it however they can, even if it doesn't make sense.

All the mishmash and politics have no place in the real science of the matter.

This will probably go ignored as most of my posts seem to or maybe I am spot on more than I think. Also I repeat that I acknowledge global warming and with my study of it I don't buy into man causing it. That is NOT the same as denying it.

And LadyMischief... Nice Post

At any rate, this man made global warming IS a means to bigger pocket books. If it is cyclical like I and many others believe, very crediable scientists at that, then there is nothing to be gained from it.

However, if MAN is the cause, then regulations can be made to control who gets to pollute and who doesn't. Believe it or not there are people who are more willing to pay millions of dollars a year to buy pollution privileges than spend those millions seeking eco friendly solutions.

Just check out this video that was on CNN this week: http://www.cnn.com/video/?/video/tec...nhouse.ninenet

Most important is towards the end of that video, this:
"... companies will pay the government about $12 billion a year for permits to pollute."

So you tell me who profits off man made global warming? The same people drumming the theory into the publics head... GOVERNMENTS.

Whether it's a fact or not a fact is immaterial to me. I tend to make fun of it and bring up GLOBAL COLDENING whenever anyone starts spouting about the evil nature-poluting humans and global warming, mostly because right now it's -40 with the windchill here... but the main point for me is that it can't hurt for us as individuals to change a few habits and make our lives a little more green-friendly as they say.

Me, I've arranged my life so that I haven't had to drive a vehicle to work for going on 18 years. I've invested tens of thousands into my rental property to have it insulated and insulated siding put on, it's now R-24 in the walls and R-50 in the attic. I had an energy efficient furnace installed. I have water saving devices installed in all toilet tanks of the house which saves a ton of water each year, plus had new windows put in throughout, and am working on putting in more energy efficient appliances.

I walk and ride my mountain bike places more than I have in probably 20 years now.

It's a start, and it can't hurt. AND doing it doesn't mean you agree with the global warming crowd. It just means you realize the planet is changing in some ways for the worse and you're willing to do your part to at least postpone the inevitable. Hell, if we all pitched in and did a few things greener, and also started putting Beano into the feed of the world's cattle so they don't fart anymore I bet the polar ice caps would turn the corner and start growing again. :D
