Everyone knows how to mix concrete, its written in plain text on the bag, but building a bridge or cathedral isnt just "working with concrete".

There is tons of guys who can mix concrete, very few who can build a wonder. Even though they all follow those same directions on the bag of mix.

Here's a few tips to consider while searching for any seo work to be done. These rules arent cast in stone, naturally there is always exceptions to the rule, and there is some I missed, I think they were pointed out before but I never updated the post.

It is possible for quality search engine guys to have several small terms and longer tail terms and still be ok, you have to judge for yourself. They may have the brains and just not the link power for the big ones.

* When you find someone who actually knows. Best be ready to go ahead with the deal and be prepared to pay. If they do have a clue, the chances of them helping you for a fee isnt very high, and if they do, they will expect just compensation. Some of my terms made high 5 figures since the sites went live so its not info a seo would be happy to give away for 2-3k. If you are looking for good people, in this field it will cost you.

* Expect a backlink/site developement budget. If you plan on taking on a project and expect to take search engine ranks away from big boys, then you will need a network to do so. If not from your own neighbourhood, then from link purchase. This isnt a one time, monthly thing, you will want them longterm. If the adult SEO you are talking to hasnt mentioned it, you will want to know where its going to come from.

* Know what you want. And know what the person you are willing to pay big dollars to wants and is capable of. Know what hes linking with, know what he is building pages with, take note of everything he did on his sites, and on your sites. You will not have this type of access to his or her brain forever, so use it wisely and get as much info as you can.

Most SEOs charge in the ballpark of what they can make themselves, otherwise what would the point be? The prices may seem outrageous, but even for the pretty obscure keywords the profits are likely to be well into the 5 figures/year...

Not sure what you consider "reasonable", but no seo who has a clue will bother SEOing for $10k, when they can make $50k/year themselves SEOing their own sites for the same keywords...

I can get you 500 one way links using 5 sets of keywords. If you have those keywords in your meta tags as well as on your pages a few times, I'm sure the rest would take care of itself by simply keeping the content fresh.
