Camera Help needed for Chrismas Gift

Photographers or photo gurus, what digital camera would you recommend for under $750? This is to be a gift for my older sister who really enjoys amateur photography as a hobby. Nature, family, sporting events, travel. A buddy of mine recommended this one: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...09157&csid=_21

Any ideas or preferences?

Thanks much! Plan to buy it this week for xmas.

An excellent bundle for <$800 SLR - your sis will be tickled pink if she doesn't have a digital slr already

Yep, I think the Digital Rebel XTi is a little cheaper and pretty nice reviews.

Just one thing - I read a D60 review a few months ago, and I remember reading the D60 only had auto-focus with AF-S and AF-I lenses - would that VR lens be compatible?

Given it's a bundle, I assume so, but not sure.

Deej has a Canon bias, I have a Nikon bias ;)

I personally prefer Nikkor lenses, as I found Canon lenses (well the 2 I had) front focussed all the time.

I started with one of those started kits - a nikon D50, but as my photography got better and I got more into it, I progressed to the D300 and started investing in the semi-pro lenses.

SLRs are great for amateurs cos they allow you to build your equipment as and when you can afford/justify the cost.

An excellent present, whether it's a canon or nikon. Forget the rest.

And this is the most important part...

regardless of the brand - she will be happy and have what she needs to progress her hobby.

I myself will one day buy a nikon to see if im missing out or simply hat the difference is - just as one day I will buy a mac. I may break it afterwards but I will buy one to see how well or bad it operates.

Hurry and get that shit and wrap it up!!!!

Thanks for the input and suggestions!!

I'll do some online reading and check out the Rebel XTi as well. I like the extra lens that comes with the Nikon I mentioned originally.

check out http://www.dpreview.com/
top notch site for camera reviews

careful though - the lens makes ALL the difference. Just get a great starter pack - both of them you picked are great. I doubt she'll see much difference between the two. More elitism attached to Nikon, although both Canon and Nikon are equally good - in DSLR, Canon probably have the edge, although Nikkor lenses are more respected.

It's your call - either is a frikken excellent gift. I'm not a pro photographer, just a keen amateur, but I know I'd hav loved to have you as a sis/brother if you were buying pressies like that for me ;)

Go test drive the D300 man - not the D3 and full frame, but a great budget compromise. It's really an excellent body that I'd fully recommend.

And then of course, the obligatory MBP to complete the collection

--edit
pb is going from canon to nikon is like going from windows to mac - forget what you have learned... all those key combinations etc - and learn afresh!! Both do the same job though tbh
