Pay for mp3?

Now way, never ever ever.

So long as the guy down the street or the guy in Germany can rip his cd and I can download the whole thing in under 5 minutes... I will never pay for music again.

Although I do buy it at shows.

But buy mp3? Next you will ask me to buy photoshop. phhht.

it's interesting that it says you'll be able to burn 3 times.....

but what if you don't burn to disc? I rarely do unless I'm going on a trip somewhere and need to bring some tunes.... otherwise they just reside on the ol' HD...

How do they plan on preventing me from burning it 1000 times if I download it?

If I can get it on my hard drive, I can burn it as many times as I like.

Even if that happened I could still rip it off one of the cds that I had already burned with it.

I don't think people will pay for downloading en masse until they make it possible to download directly to the car stereo. The average person just doesn't spend enough time with their computers or home stereo for it to explode.

If they move it to the car though... that's a whole different story!

The real world equivalent to putting a price on MP3's at this point in the evolution of the internet would be the IRS levying a voluntary tax on oxygen.. and about as successful.

These music companies have NO FUCKING CLUE. Who in there right mind is going to pay $10-20 for a bunch of mp3's you have to wait to download and what IS NOT CD quality. These idiots don't realize how hard its going to be sell a product (MP3) to the world that everyone has accessed FOR FREE over the last 4 years.

What they need to do is start selling the MP3 music online for $5 per FULL CD. That is reasonable, and they still make money. People would buy a CD at that price (myself included)
AND they should sell the FULL version of the CD for $10-15, for those that want CD quality. I have a CD I want to buy right now and if I could go online to say "onlinemusic.com" and pay my $10-15 and download it and then burn it I'd be happy too, saves me going to the mall and walking all the way into the mall to find the damn CD store to buy my 1 CD.

I don't use MP3 other than in my car (a friend burned me 8 full mp3 CD) like 2000 songs or something. The quality is just not the same and if I really want to enjoy a song I get the CD, and will continue to buy CD's as I like listening to Audiophile music.

the uncompressed version is around 40-50 mbs per track which i think is wave format and theres usually 12 tracks per cd 12x40mbs =480mbs ... that would take you quite some time if your not on a fast connection compared to the 2-3mb mp3 files.

Firstly, to let you burn 3 times, it's simple. It's not going to be a simple MP3. They've been working on new standards for a couple of years already where they can encode the number of times a music file can be listened to, and burned as well. It will most likely be using their proprietary player as well like most online music sites.

As for if this service will work or not, I think it CAN to a certain degree. If they push it hard enough as the alternative, then people will buy into it. Don't believe me? There's still tons of people on AOL isn't there? And any experienced user wouldn't think of going on AOL, instead they'd use a real internet company.
