SCAM ALERT: Did you stay at the Palms for Internext?

I just checked my credit card statement for Dec/Jan and apparently the day before I left Las Vegas, someone used my Visa card to buy something worth 13,000 Yuan ($2400Cdn) from a shopping mall in China. Imagine that! I've never even been to China!

I *only* used my card in Vegas for the hotel room, nothing else, not even an ATM machine or a taxi. So that leaves the hotel staff a little suspect.

Unless my card number was ripped before that and that's just the first scam charge that showed up.

Argh!

Anyhoo, I just got off the phone with Visa and apparently they're asking for an invoice for the item, whatever it was. Then they send me paperwork to sign saying I disallow the charge, THEN they might remove the charge for whatever it is.

Goddamn fucking hell.

I've gone thru this with visa about once per year, mostly because my credit card gets hit so many times from media buys. Every time they will refund your money. They'll send you a document declaring that you did not buy the above mentioned items. You sign it, send it back and you'll get your money back. It actually couldn't be easier. No wonder people chargeback so often.

That's a relief. What about any interest that may accrue over that time?

Credit card skimming/hacking seems to be reaching epidemic levels in general, I wonder if this was any ripple effect on surfers thinking twice about using thier cards online especially when it comes to porn ?

I don't know why the credit companies don't put a 2nd pin to verify the purchase on a credit card - not the pin you use to withdraw from the ATM. If I find a credit card I can purchase stuff with it, but without a security pin it would be harder to purchase online.

Might stop lots of fraud.

I watch my bank account like a hawk and only once have I caught anything - when my waiter at the pizza place decided to add in his own tip. If someone snagged my card and used it for something in China I'd be pissed.

Sorry to hear about what happened to you.

My cards are set-up to disallow charges over a set amount, without a verbal confirmation from me (basically I have to call-in, answer some questions only I would know the answer to, and authorize the charge).

I also manage my card accounts closely, keeping in these accounts only about 20% more than I plan to use during a given period. I only move the money over from an account that I don't have a card for, as I need to.

I pay extra in service charges by having multiple accounts at several banks, but service charges are tax deductible, and it substantially minimizes my exposure to scammers.

The same with PayPal. I only keep in there 10-20% more than I have a plan to spend, and then only move in new money as necessary.

Some good tips in this thread...

They should credit your account the day you make the call to them to contest the charges. They'll take it on good faith you'll sign that document and return it, if you don't then i assume they'll put the charge back on, but you shouldn't be charged any interest. You will lose on foreign exchange though when they credit your account as the FX rates always work against you.

What I do is have 2 accounts, one is a regular account with no visa/credit card and the other one is a visa depit card -- same bank and use online banking. When I travel I transfer from one account to the other. So even if someone does use my card, it's very little and because it's debit it's limited the amount in that account.

Wal-Mart billed me for the same transaction twice ($56) it was easy to spot on my statement but serves as a reminder even without your card getting hacked to always check for mistakes .

Thanks for the heads up. I will check my statements.

3 years ago after the Internext show in Florida I got a call from AMEX asking me if I had my card in my possession. I was already back home and I had my card with me. They said that someone was at a Jewelry store in Florida and had a physical card with them that had my number on it while I was talking with them on the phone.

They said they would handle it, Not sure if they arrested the idiot.

Sure, the card companies need let you pick a pin before the card leaves their facilities. This way it is useless if it gets stolen in the mail.

FUCKKKKK!!!! I am so sorry to hear that... I really hope you get this cc fraud sorted out and that you don't have to pay any other charges
