:mad Yahoo domains jump like 300% in price...

I just received an email from Yahoo domains telling me that I have a renewal on a domain and that in July prices will be going up like 300%

Important note: Beginning on July 1, 2008, Yahoo!'s annual domain renewal price increases to $34.95 per year.

If we received emails like this from all the registers...the little guys who are holding domains are out of business for sure. That would be me too... Sometimes it takes time to generate just a 9.99 renewal fee let alone trying to make a profit on some names. With websites in the long run you will do well, but the 1st couple of years of renewal fees on a thousand domains suck. Luckily the domain with yahoo I want to expire, why I used yahoo in the 1st place, I was able to catch a domain that had expired but still in the registers account...and the other registers said it was not available....but with yahoo it worked when I tried to catch it.

That price increase will probably save a few jobs over there at Yahoo.

Before I had a reseller account, I used to registrar hop cause transfers were usually cheaper than renewals so I switched between namecheap and godaddy alot. Now that I have a reseller account, I just get domains/renewals for $6.49. They've announced that prices will increase at some point but that was two years ago.

They did that a while back actually.

I forgot about a bunch of domains I had over there from years ago and last summer I noticed a $400 charge on my credit card. I called over and told them they could either refund my money minus the $9 I should have been charged for each one or else I'll transfer everything and charge it all back.

They refunded my money.

Yahoo has been ass out for quite a while now. This is just their latest scheme to monetize their site. If I were Yahoo, I'd open up all their channels to advertising--not those gimpy ads they have running--but channel specific shit. That place is a gold mine but they're too busy thinking inside the box--up their collective asses. Such a shame.

I dunno why anyone would register names there. Fabulous, GoDaddy, Moniker - end of discussion. Other registrars shouldn't even exist except maybe for the obscure ccTLDs and whatnot.

In all honestly, fuck them

I had a number of domains with them that I transfered to godaddy, but prior to doing so, they charge you a month before the domain expires. so I have a number of domains that were in the process of being transfered and they suspended the account because payment didnt go thru and i had to supply a new CC # or I canceled the account and was charged a few days later for $35.

I have about 6 disputes out with Amex with them. One domain was set to expire in Jan of 2010 and I was charged AGAIN in December 2009

I just cancelled the automatic renewal on my yahoo domain, and wow do they try to confuse you...it seems even the main stream companies will try and screw you anyway possible if you are not careful. Online was supposed to be easier but not lately. It looks like they might have got me for that $35 fee in 2008 without even realizing the increase...and I did not even want the name last year. Lets hope we do not see consolidation in the online services and domain market otherwise you will get only a few companies that will turn the screws for higher prices throughout.

that was their strategy before too...
cheap registration - expensive renewals...

that's why is the best to avoid companies that sell other products and services beside domains...

if you need domains buy them at place where they are selling domains only...
(like namecheap.com)
