I saw another one this morning and if you ever seen one these things are fucking small...

i think i read a news article recently about a lorry driver who drove into the back of a smart car, the smart car got wedged on the trucks front and the truck driver did not even know he had hit it, the truck driver continued driving down the motorway until someone spotted this and called the cops and they pulled him over.

the people in the smart car just had to sit and wait whilst they were driven down the motorway stuck on the front of the truck.

This truck collected a merc sedan (dragging it sideways) and claimed he didn't know he was nudging a large car for a few hundred metres... he thought the noise and movement was an issue with his tyres.

I recall a civil case where a husband and wife were issued a fine because they parked both of their smart cars in one parking spot... the question raised was, are you paying per car, or per spot?

It's always been a big misconception that the size of a vehicle affects it's crash safety. It's simply not true, a large truck can be dangerous while the smart car has amazing crash safety ratings.

And saying "but look how small it is! come on!" is not an intelligent defense :P

They ain't as bad as people claim, the Smart Fourtwo has a Euro NCAP rating of 4 stars, better than a 02 Cherokee.

They are actually quite safe despite looking so fragile!
The whole car is built round a safety cell which is supposed to be incredibly strong although most of the car is made of plastic!

The cars are driven on the whole though by complete pricks although at least they arn't as bad as those zany mini drivers who wave at each other!

You should see what happens to it after a 35mph crash. The steering wheel was actually embedded in the driver's seat and the whole thing looked like a piece of scrap after compacting.

70 mph crash:

They're actually quite safe. Even when compared to SUVs - which are often very unsafe, ironically.

i don't like them personally but it's always the same 2 misconceptions: small and unsafe

both not true - bigger from the inside than you think and as safe as any other modern car

i just think they are ugly - but thats my personal taste

lol .. just went to their site ..

Safety
Full-size driver and passenger airbags
Head/Neck side airbags
esp® - electronic stability program with hill start assist
Anti-lock braking system (abs) with electronic brake force distribution
Hydraulic dual-circuit brake system
Integral safety seats
Seat belts with belt tensioner and belt-force limiter
Drive lock - auto-activation of the central locking when driving
Top Tether for child restraint system
Panic button on key
Tire repair kit

I think it is missing " grease and pry bar" to pry your dead ass out and "strainer" to separate body parts after collision ..

Put a person in any car and drive them at 70 into a solid wall and they are going to die idiot...

And you do know what pieces of shit hummers are? I would bet a smart care is all round MORE safe than a hummer.

There is nothing like getting on a country road in a mini, putting the top down.. and getting it up to like 120mph.. and taking all the little country curves...

We actually had a cop turn his lights on.. pull us over.. then ask if he could follow us to watch and see how it manuevered one day...

Granted it was like 11am on a Tuesday... in like Bum Fuck Egypt.. but was the coolest shit ever.

We <3 Our Mini.

cannot wait til the electric one comes out for more people..

That thing survives way better than my car ever would. And has more airbags and safety enhancements too.

Plus it can fit right in a briefcase :D

I think they're kinda cool. I drive a Prowler and before that an MG. My wife drives a corvette. I also have a 4 door jeep wrangler for fun. And I still wouldn't mind having one of those smart cars to just fuck around town in. I HATE the price of fuel, it pisses me off everytime I put gas in the tank. I wouldn't want that to be my main car...I like sportscars too much...but for a car to run to the store in? Perfect.

As far as safety goes if it gets hit by another vehicle, I'll bet it's a lot safer than me on a Harley getting nailed by that same other vehicle. Either way it's gonna hurt real bad. But at least I won't get "road rash" in the Smart Car

Edit: One of my neighbors has one, and it looks pretty cool in real life too.

oh yeah real pieces of shit lol

youtube it

i'm pretty sure i'd rather be in a hummer then a smart car getting smacked by just about any car

and not true at all i've been hit at around 70mph and lived spun around 3 times into lanes of on coming traffic hit a guard rail slid over 200 ft hit the guard rail again and got out laughing, and that was in a mitsubishi 3000gt vr4

Exactly my point Size does not equal safety.

I have one. It is a cool car. It has a tridium cell that is based on a formula one race cage with side and front airbags. Four star crash rating.

Everyone always asks if I feel safe, and I bet they never ask Harley riders that. ;)

It's definitely just a perception thing. Like banning second hand smoke even though most cars pump out the equal of 1 million cigarettes worth of carcinogenic exhaust per minute.

and not true at all i've been hit at around 70mph and lived spun around 3 times into lanes of on coming traffic hit a guard rail slid over 200 ft hit the guard rail again and got out laughing, and that was in a mitsubishi 3000gt vr4
Getting hit at around 70 mph isn't the same as driving straight into a concrete wall at 70 mph.

Also, look at the youtube videos of popular suvs in crash tests.

When I lived in Holland I owned a mainstream marketing company. We had 3 of them and we only used them to park near shopping malls or at expo's plastered with wraps for various companies. They got tons of attention, a few expo models that worked for me got to drive them and they loved it.

I am waiting for the first aff prog to park one of those things at a show.
