Neighborhood recomendations in LA

The wife and I are looking to move out in late May and wanted some neighborhood recomendations. Ultimately we are looking to rent either a nice 2 bedroom apartment or a small house. Looking to be located close to the valley. Want something safe and decently hip. Price range $1200-1500 a month with parking included.

I left LA 5 years ago (thank god) and think you'd be hard pressed to find something in that price range that is "safe and decently hip" with 2 bedrooms.

From what I recall... if you "must" live in the Valley... Studio City and surrounding is the only place to be.

Low budget but do-able in an OK area, but it will be an area filled with other apts and tons of people parking on the street (you may have too even)

Head south a bit and do Orange County, anywhere but Anahiem or Santa Ana

I lived in LA's SF Valley for over 20 years. I recommend that you try West LA (except the Palms area and any areas near the 405 freeway) or Santa Monica (the closer to the beach the better). Marina Del Rey is great too.

That's a tough order to fill, but the places you should look at are:

Silverlake
Los Feliz
---these two are hipster central. Artsy and plenty to do. May not fit price, but you can get lucky.

Echo Park
-It's regentrifying so you can find good deals there and it's next door to Silverlake/Los Feliz. Right near Dodger Stadium if you're a ball fan. Will def find deals in this neighborhood still.

Beechwood Canyon
---It's technically in Hollywood, but it's its own little community. It's 5 mins or less from Silverlake/Los Feliz.

Venice
---The best part of LA to live in IMO. Can be very pricey, but you can get very lucky once in a while. Worth checking out. The Valley is 15 mins up the 405.

Santa Monica
--I hesitate to put this on the list because it's very unhip, but also clean, safe and close to all major freeways. Additionally, they have rent control there so you can really score if you hunt well.

Oops I didn't read your full specifications.

Based on the parameters you set, try North Hollywood or Burbank

For great listings, try http://www.westsiderentals.com/

Have a great move to Southern Cal!

I never lived in LA myself, used to live in Thousand Oaks, CA which I liked.
The problem is the "nice" areas in LA are priced high.
I would like in Marina Del Rey, or santa monica. Studio city is also ok from what I remember.

North Hollywood blows! I live in West Hollywood and like it but if I had a choice it would definitely be Los Feliz.
