eBay negative feedback

You buy something on eBay but you never receive the item you bought. The seller says he/she shipped the item to the correct address. He/she didn't ship it with registered mail because the auction didn't offer registered mail and you didn't ask the seller to ship the item registered. The seller does not offer a refund or replacement after you let him/her know that you haven't received the item.

In a case like this, do you give the seller negative feedback? I never did it but it happens so often that I don't receive items and I'm pretty fed up with it.. Just wondering what others would do as far as feedback concerns.

Watch what you say

might get sued

which is totally uncalled for ... ever since that court case was in the news, I think ebay should have either eliminated the rating system or backed up the buyer

You say seller did not offer a refund, but did you request one? You shouldn't have to, but just requesting it may be enough to let the seller know you are serious and you may still be able to get your item if you really want it.

Not commenting on your case but I think since ebay took away the right of sellers to leave negative feedback of buyers the whole system is fucked. Plenty of people that win auctions and say they never recieved the item, but really have and then demand refunds and e-bay gives them to them. Sellers take so much more risk than buyers do nowadays on ebay.

I think I shouldn't have to. Usually in cases like this sellers make it clear that they do not intend to offer a refund, although not in so many words. For me usually reason enough to not ask for a refund. Probable also because I feel partly responsible because I didn't ask the seller to ship by registered mail. In some cases simply because I forget it, and in others because the shipping costs would be higher than the item price.

I understand what you mean, I pretty much feel the same way. If it were a unique item or something I had to have I might press a little more for it. In this situation, if I didn't ask for a tracking number or registered mail, I think I would leave a neutral instead of a negative.

I would also file a claim with PayPal to get my money back because sellers know that if they don't use tracking, they run the risk of losing the item in the mail and having to refund. That's the way it goes. PayPal seller protection rules put the burden of proof on the seller. No tracking number, no proof it was ever shipped and buyer gets the $$ back. This applies to US transactions, I'm not sure what happens if one or both parties are outside the US.

That's a tough call.

As a seller. I've had packages that were shipped and delivered...but disappeared between the time the package was left and the buyer returned home to pick it up.

If you can try to get your money back through Paypal, I'd leave it at that. He may very well have sent it out, you can't really verify that. You'll probably get your money back. Be happy about that.

the solution is to require all items to be sent through trackable shipping methods.

It doesn't matter if the seller didn't offer tracking or insurance. One of the dirty little secrets of eBay is that shipping insurance is actually for the protection of the sender. The seller is legally responsible for delivering the items sold. It doesn't matter if it is a little old lady selling on eBay or a large company with their own website.

If the seller cannot afford to eat the cost of a lost item and the buyer didn't pay for the insurance, then the seller needs to make the determination to pay for insurance themselves or not.

If you paid with PayPal, you are probably covered under buyer protection. File a claim. If you paid with your credit card, then file a claim with them as a second choice.

And yes, leave a negative.

That's what I did today and the seller promised me a refund now. Before I filed the claim the seller said that he had proof of shipping. I think he was bluffing ;-)

It doesnt matter, if you paid via paypal and didnt get your item, file a complaint with paypal and choose "Did not reveive item"

The seller after that is gonna have to prove he shipped the item with a tracking number, if he doesnt, they will charge back the money to your account.

As far as the feedback goes, just dont leave any

I got burned like that once and only once. Now if I sell something I ship it via PayPal with a free tracking number. One guy tried to tell me he didn't receive it, I sent him the tracking number and never heard from him again.

If you don't leave any feedback it keeps coming back in your face every time you go to My eBay. There's no option to refuse to leave feedback for some reason.

Paypal should force registered mail to prevent crap and lies. Maybe even start offering their own delivery/mail service.

As a Power Seller, we send everything out with a tracking number and delivery confirmation. You can't even tag an item as shipped without adding a tracking number of some sort.

We do this BECAUSE we've had to learn the hard way. You are right, it should be mandatory.
