Recommend a lesser known/overlooked Movie!

Looking for lesser known and possibly overlooked movie suggestions,

none of the typical mainstream movies that everyone has already seen but something a little obscure.. this can be foreign movies, period pieces, anything that has some quality.

I'm sure there are some larger foreign films with big budgets that a lot of people haven't seen, even stuff like Amelie, Downfall, etc.. so those are good suggestions too.

Here is a PERFECT example of an overlooked foreign movie - "The Boss of it All".

Doesn't have to be foreign, just a good movie that the average american hasn't heard of.

An example of a good non-foreign (english speaking) overlooked movie - "Two Hands".

I know there is some untapped gold somewhere, and I'm looking for it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Amelie is hardly overlooked.

If you want 'overlooked' films in that same genre, check out:
The delicatessen
Un long dimanche de fiançailles [A very long engagement]
City of the lost children
[all same director as amelie, all w/ more substance, imo]

Jeux des enfants [Love me if you dare is the english title, I think]
Different director, great film

Romper Stomper - Aussie movie about skinheads with Russel Crowe (super cute girl plays main female role)

Shallow Grave - awesome Scottish movie with Ewan McGregor (Trainspotting) about three friends who take on new roommate who dies of drug overdose in the room as soon as he's moved in. When they find him dead in his room, they also find a suitcase full of money..... Fucking great movie

Run Lola Run - awesome German movie (in German) with that chick who also played in first Bourne movie

Not a foreign movie but this film was great. I like movies where someone is pissed off and goes on a killing spree. I think every movie should have someone who is pissed off.

La Haine - Great French film. Got shown it when I was at school and didn't appreciate what a good film it was till later on.

Once Were Warriors - Incredible Kiwi film dealing with domestic violence.

BRAZIL

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazil_(film)

Brazil is a 1985 film directed by Terry Gilliam. It was written by Gilliam, Charles McKeown, and Tom Stoppard and stars Jonathan Pryce. The film also features Robert De Niro, Kim Greist, Michael Palin, Katherine Helmond, Bob Hoskins, and Ian Holm. John Scalzi's Rough Guide to Sci-Fi Movies describes the film as a "dystopian satire".

The film centers on Sam Lowry (Jonathan Pryce), a young man trying to find a woman who appears in his dreams while he is working in a mind-numbing job and living a life in a small apartment, set in a dystopian world in which there is an over-reliance on poorly maintained (and rather whimsical) machines. Brazil's bureaucratic, totalitarian government is reminiscent of the government depicted in George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, except that it has a buffoonish, slap-stick quality, and lacks any kind of figurehead.

Jack Mathews, movie critic and author of The Battle of Brazil (1987), characterized the film as "satirizing the bureaucratic, largely dysfunctional industrial world that had been driving [Gilliam] crazy all his life."[1] Though a success in Europe, the film flopped upon initial release in North America, even with the extra publicity of the fight with the studio. It has since become an important cult film.

I second Romper Stomper.
There's also a scene that has 'CaveClan' tags on the wall [ australian exploring community ] - still not sure if they knew the film was going to be shot, or it was wild coincidence.

In anycase, if you want to have a really nice movie experience in similar styles, check the other ones I recommended.

If you're in a for a 4am tired movie experience:
- The quiet earth [ decent apocalypse movie, without the bullshit ]
- Requiem for a dying planet [ this film is amazing ]

If you're in for a bit of a mind fuck
- one point zero
- primer [ I cannot underline how incredible this film is ]

Horror / Gore / Japanese film fans:
- itchy the killer

Great movies in this thread! I think I've seen most of them, but I'll try to add a few that people haven't seen.

Dark Days - documentary about people living in abandoned subway tunnels.
The original "The Hitcher" - still one of my favourite horror/thriller movies
Sunshine - Space mind games courtesy of Danny Boyle.

The Hillside Strangler - few years old and not known much as far as I know.

The Seven Samurai - probably more known but imo the greatest movie of all time! (kinda obscure to most westerners.)

Kung Fu for Sale - funny old classic with great kung fu in it.

The secret Diary of Sigmund Freud - funny movie and bugged out, another classic imo.

urotsukidoji - Had to put that one there... saw it at 13... bad idea haha

Filmed in Paris the film that comes to mind is Bitter Moon which is directed by Roman Polanski of China Town fame well probably more famous for his criminal act. I havent seen it in years but I remember loving it. Check it out Bitter Moon.

Cinderella Man - set in the 1930`s and about a washed-up boxer who came back to win the title.

Brilliant movie starring Russell Crowe. Probably wrong to say it was overlooked but I believe I`m right in saying that it did not perform particularly well at the box office.

Well worth watching if you haven`t seen.

Everyone's tastes differ.
Some people, like the OP, like to broaden their horizons.

Film is an amazing genre. Yes, there are some films, made under the guise of 'art' that are fairly atrocious [ "Quest for Fire" is probably one of the best/worst ], but I don't think any of the films listed in this thread are 'artsy fartsy' - and I've seen around 85% of what's listed here.

I'm genuinely sorry to hear your attitude is going to prevent you from seeing some things that might have interested / excited / motivated you.
No matter, Fast and Furious 4 is coming out soon!

Edit: If anyone is still reading this thread, three of the most beautiful 'artsy fartsy' movies I've seen are:

In the mood for love
2046
White Countess

All have extended scenes in Chinese, xenophobes can skip this post now ;)

Most of these aren't foreign or COMPLETELY unknown, but they weren't box office smashes either and most people probably haven't seen them or have forgotten about them, but all really good movies IMO:

Suicide Kings - Hard to call this a dark comedy but god, Walken and Leary make this thriller probably funnier than most comedy movies

Lucky Number Slevin - Watch it all the way through even if you're annoyed by the first half of it - very unique in my opinion in the way it was all laid out and ultimately ended

Phoenix - One of my long-time faves, and you'll see a verrry different Anthony Lapaglia (from Without a Trace) and the sexiest Brittany Murphy you'll ever see, pre-blonde days

Very Bad Things - Verry dark comedy, almost the definition of guilty pleasure

Das Experiment - Based on a true story about a bunch of people volunteering to act out prison life for an experiment...I've only seen this once a long time ago, but it's left a lasting impression, very interesting movie

A Life Less Ordinary - Had to look to make sure this was as little known as I thought because it was advertised a fair amount when it came out, but apparently flopped. Very unique romance movie and actually pretty funny.

Feeling Minnesota - You may not like this but I did, and kind of shows my weird taste in movies because people'd see Keanu and get turned off, but honestly this is kind of like a mild unknown Fargo.

Candy - Very moving drug addiction movie with a great Heath performance - the dude can act

The Illusionist - Don't recall this doing too well in theaters but was pretty cool I thought. Edward Norton good as always.

Reindeer Games - Kind of noir action thriller type. I hate Ben Affleck and this movie did flop but it was pretty solid nonetheless. I can't get into CSI:NY because Gary Senise is such a convincing bad guy that it's hard to see him as a good guy in anything, lol.

Ice Harvest - Another noir action thriller of sorts, kind of like the more noirish slick version of Reindeer Games.

A History Of Violence - Probably the most well-known on this list but felt it should be listed just in case you haven't seen it.

Judgment Night - No, not T2. :P Another movie that without Denis Leary would not have "comedy" in my description of it, but ultimately is probably funnier than a lot of comedy movies thanks to him. Pretty cool old "on the run" action thriller though, definitely makes me make sure I know where I'm driving at all times! Interesting to see Everlast get an acting role albeit a pretty wordless one.

Wicker Park - Interesting romance movie, cool cast, ultimately an overall entertaining pleasurable moviewatching experience.

187 - If you've ever seen Dangerous Minds, this is the Samuel L Jackson take on it, except it's most certainly worth watching while Dangerous Minds...er, isn't. With movies like this, I'd wonder why anyone would ever want to teach high school anywhere let alone a rough area. The Substitute is another good one kind of like this, but is more well known and not as good IMO.

Just finished watching 'Die Welle' ... it was decent, but it seemed especially relevant now after the recent school shooting in Germany

Well, not everyone here is american, and not every american here is average ;)
In anycase, if you want to have a really nice movie experience in similar styles, check the other ones I recommended.

If you're in a for a 4am tired movie experience:
- The quiet earth [ decent apocalypse movie, without the bullshit ]
- Requiem for a dying planet [ this film is amazing ]

If you're in for a bit of a mind fuck
- one point zero
- primer [ I cannot underline how incredible this film is ]

Horror / Gore / Japanese film fans:
- itchy the killer
Is this the one you mean?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0226690/ "zero point one"
