This way to the Egress
Domain Aftermarket Scammers, what a great business model.
I have a domain (well I have a bunch of domains but this is about one in particular) for a softball team I help with. When I bought the domain, the .com and .net versions were taken so I bought the .org version. We use it for a team website, predominantly to communicate schedules and such. Last week the .com version was expiring (I think it expired on the 10th). Starting on the 8th I started hearing from the scammers. One in particular hit me with 8 or 10 emails between the 8th and yesterday. Then 2 other companies joined in yesterday morning. Each of these claimed to have the .com version of the domain for sale. On the 8th, on the parked page, the .com version was being offered for $975. On the 16th, I was offered the .com version, via email, for $657. But it also offered a discount for up to $300. (Woo Hoo) On the 17th, the other 2 companies offered me the .com version for $99.00 and $99.97. I went into godaddy yesterday morning and registered it for $9.99 Is this really the way these guys make their money? Fooling someone into thinking that they control the domain? As PT Barnum would say... "This way to the egress." Here is the email chain: Quote:

You'll get that from time to time. I know I do.
A few month ago I was contacted about a url I control. It was going to expire and this company wanted to buy it off of me. I didnt want to sell, so I renewed it and they wrote me a very nasty letter about renewing so close to the deadline for renewal when they wanted the site, bla bla bla. I dont know how companys like that stay in business but the bottom line is if you want a domain, either buy it from whoever has it, or play the waiting game. The waiting game pays off more often then not, in my experience. Companys like the ones you were contacted with make thier money off of people who dont know what thier doing in the first place, and hence, almost deserve to pay 100 times what the domain is worth in the first place..
