I want to learn a new programming language that I can use to make simple apps for Windows and Linux and some scripts for my websites. Nothing super-advance that will handle gigabytes of data.

I'm pretty good with Visual Basic, VB.net, ASP and I know some PHP so it would be good with a language that was similar in some ways to VB or PHP. I've been thinking of Python, Java and Ruby. I think they all can be run under several platforms and be used for "web"-programming. Which one should I choose?

		 My personal views:

Ruby is the one I like most, but its popularity appears to be fading somewhat. It's easily the most fun to write in - in my opinion - but a few years from now it might be a dead language. Python is nice to work in as well, and *much* less verbose than Java. You'll get things done quite a bit faster, usually. And, unlike Ruby, its future looks fairly bright. Java is a pain in the ass, awful, disgusting and horrible. Also, it's by far the most useful language for getting (corporate) work. And it's not going anywhere. Ever.

Sounds like Python is the way to go then. I think I understand Python code a bit more than Ruby code so it's good. Thanks for your replys!

If you are going to learn Python I suggest you look into django... it's a python framework that is truly amazing.
