How does the intel7 cpu perform

I have started to "plan" my new pc and i have been studying the hardware and compared but it's always better to hear upfront.

I have been looking extra at:

Intel Quad Q9650 3,00 GHz,
Intel i7 920

If I were to buy today im going with the new intel i7.

Im also gonna get a 10K rpm hard drive (Western Digital VelociRaptor)

So what do you say ?

I have the i7 920. I upgraded from a Q6600.

This is the fastest system I've owned. Its great for multimedia creation, video rendering, etc.

Core i7 is a monster! Instead of Raptor i think you should should consider buying ssd, let's say Patriot Warp 32 or 64 gb ssd (175MB/s read and 100 MB/s write speed) it works great when you install OS and all the Programs on it.

P.S. Some dude installed Windows 7 using core i7 and two of these ssd's in raid 0 under 15 seconds.

i7 is a beast. Fuck the raptor though get 2 WD's and put them in raid 0. Extra storage and save money.

The SSD stats are amazing:

800x faster at finding files than a 10,000 rpm SATA WD Raptor WD740ADFD
125x faster at serving files than a WD Raptor.

The HyperDrive5 is the fastest Internal Hard Disk in the World from a seek time perspective.

It has less than 10 microseconds read access time and less than 10 microseconds write access time.

It does not - as the best Flash SSDs claim - offer... 'RAM-like performance.'

It offers RAM performance.

If that doesn't solve your IO bottleneck nothing will!

How did you go to a q9650 to an i7? the mobo architecture is completly different. Not too mention how the memory functions. What kind of mobo do you have?

920 overclocked to 3.4 and it's serious impressive. H264 encodes 40-60% faster than a Q9550 at the same clock speed.

SSDs have a serious drawback

I just built a Core i7 920 system with a 10,000 rpm internal HDD and Windows Vista 64 bit OS. I am still making tests on it with Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 , but it seems to have sped up my high definition video rendering times dramatically.

i7 all the way.

and don't compare clock speeds, which really haven't changed much in the last few years.

A 2.66ghz i7 will blow away a 3.2 from the last generation. Clock for clock they are way faster.

I have one i7 system and I like it so much I'm ditching all of my q6600 systems for new i7's. It would be a waste of money to buy the older chip.

At the end of the month, the xeon version is coming out, so we can have double i7's in one system.

asus p6t is good. Also, you have to get triple channel memory...so it goes 3Gb, 6GB, 12gb etc.

I have the Intel Core i7-965 Extreme Edition with a WD Veliciraptor 300-gig drive, then a 1-tb drive for storage, 6gb ram, and an ASUS Rampage II Extreme LGA 1366 motherboard and it kicks soooo much ass.

I've used AMD CPUs on my last couple of systems, but figured I'd go back to Intel after they put out the Core i7, I'm glad I did
