:2cents Smokers are pissing and moaning about the cost of cigarettes.

Why don't you just go fuck yourselves, assholes?

Quote:
Smokers fume as prices jump ahead of fed tax hike:

Debbie Winningham of Red Rock knew that the federal cigarette tax was set to go up 61 cents a pack on April 1, but when she walked into the Indian Smoke Shop on East Second Street this week, she said she "nearly had a stroke."

It was sticker shock: Cigarettes had gone up about $5 a carton or so, depending on the brand.

The era of the 25-cent cigarette has arrived weeks early as big tobacco companies bumped up prices in anticipation of next month's federal tax increase. A carton of Marlboro, selling at a discount shop (sales tax added) for about $39 two weeks ago, now is about $44. Other stores now are charging $5 to $7 a pack for brand name cigarettes, even as the Nevada Legislature considers a bill that would tack on another $1 a pack in state taxes to the 80 cents already charged.

The latest price increase has smokers fuming.

"I saw Kools for nearly $50 a carton. That's crazy," Winningham said. "The cigarette companies not only raised the prices in advance to cover the tax, but they added their cut, too. They are taking advantage of the situation."

Thomas G. Clayton of Sparks said he noticed the cigarette price increase at a 7-Eleven last weekend. The clerk told him the tax already was in effect, which he said he knew wasn't true. He drove to other stores and found the same price increases but said clerks had different theories about why the price rose weeks in advance of the new tax.

They should do the same thing to alcohol.

Why shouldn't they bitch some. Sure they are getting hit with a sin tax. On the flip side that very evil plant has not only played a large role in building this country from the very beginning, it currently pays for so damn many programs that if people either stopped smoking or began using black market sources it would really fuck up a whole lot of shit.

Cigarettes are still priced cheap when you consider the public health menace they create.

So they should tax guns and cars 700 or 800 percent as well?

Exactly, that is why they should be doing this to alcohol too. I mean more people are killed every year by drunk drivers than there are from second hand smoke. Ohhh, the hypocrisy.

It's a regressive tax. I'm on the quiting list myself as I'm sure many will. Or like someone else said people will resort to black market such as ordering from out of the country etc. Price by next month will be up 50% a pack. Becoming cheaper to smoke a joint and be done with it.

Good, force those broke ass chain smokers to quit smoking and stop killing the people around them.

I'm all for this, and the laws of no smoking in public areas. Just because you want to kill yourself, doesn't mean the non-smokers who are forced to be near your chain smoking ass' want to die of lung cancer.

Really?

Second hand smoke might kill you in 20 years but an idiot talking on their cell phone while driving can kill you today.

Maybe we should tax the fuck out of cell phones and see how long it takes for people to bitch about the unfairness of that...

Honestly, instead of creating new taxes, the gov should better utilize the taxes already in place. We don't need new taxes, there's plenty of tax money. We need better management and less bureaucratic bloat.

I don't like smoking and I don't like taxes. I think that people should stop smoking, but I don't think they should be taxed into it.

Taxes for everything... give me a break.

Check the average emissions coming out of a cars exhaust pipe and what they consist of. In comparison second hand smoke is a fucking joke.
PS - lung cancer is lower on the list of cancers for smokers than other forms, people just like to cling to it.

Cigarettes provide employment, the keep farms active, require purchasing of large equipment, and pay shit loads in taxes that funds just about everything in this country - except medical stuff and barely any non smoking stuff. They also act as a stimulant to the human body and work like any other drug.

Perhaps if every single cent of tax applied to the ciggerettes and tobacco in general went entirely into healthcare I am pretty damn certain you would sing a different tune. However as mentioned the tax on alcohol provides much less overall and causes just as much if not more medical harm.

People should be caned for smoking while walking down the street. Jacked booted police should just pull them out of the crowd, hold them to the ground and cane the backs of their legs while screaming, "IN WHAT REALITY IS BLOWING SMOKE AND FLICKING ASH IN OTHER PEOPLE'S FACES POLITE, YOU RIDICULOUS MOTHERFUCKING ADDICT?" They shouldn't stop until the smoker's legs are covered in deep lacerations and the smoker, crying like a child, is only able to pull him or her self along the blood stained pavement by his or her nicotine stained hands.

Ok.
I was being facetious. If you don't know the word look it up.

The fact is EVERYTHING can be dangerous and to tax it as such is fucking stupid. Who cares if someone wants to kill themselves with smoking. The same with drinking, I only mentioned that to get a reaction from all the drinkers.

Alcohol is just as deadly as smoking and to think it shouldn't be taxed because it is somehow different is also stupid. I have known more people who have died from the bottle or suffered some physical ailment than people from smoking. I have even known more people who were killed by drunk drivers than by cancer from second hand smoke.

Taxing is not the answer, for ANYTHING. It is just another get rich scheme by the boys on Capitol Hill. They should try doing their job for a change and make laws about where you can smoke rather than robbing from the smokers.

I also brought up alcohol because those who may hate smokers probably drink and it carries health and public dangers too. They would bitch too, just like you, if their poison was being infringed upon.

Kind of why I cried... Ohhhh, the hypocrisy in a later post.

Absolute and utter bullshit.

Governments don't like to admit it, but financially, western countries actually benefit from smokers. Smokers, on average, die 10 years closer to their pension age than non-smokers. What do you think that saves in things like Medicare, pension payouts and health care costs?

The only reason studies consistently appear to find the opposite is that they invariably consider "utility", and give it a monetary value. What that means is that they typically value each year of life added at $15000-$45000, and take that into the equation. That's not actual money, though - it's the "intrinsic value" of living an extra year.

Smoking is obviously bad, and it's obviously best not to do it. The argument that it costs society money, however, is false. In terms of actual money, it hugely benefits society. Most pension funds would suffer or even collapse without people dying from smoking-related illnesses, government tax income would take a significant hit without people paying sin taxes on tobacco, and health care costs would drop only slightly in the long run if everyone stopped smoking.

Marijuana being illegal and cigarettes being legal pretty much tells you who the govt is friends with. There's absolutely no contest as to which is worse for you and here we are today with immense hypocrisy in our laws.

They should legalize hemp and start using it manufactor products in the states. Not only would that allow farmers to get off the tabacoo and rejuvinate agriculture in general, it could also bring manufactoring jobs back to the states. You could argue that rape and murder also provide jobs if you wanted to as well though.

They could legalize a lot of shit or prohibit many others that are doing crap loads of harm, example most corn production. This has nothing to do with hemp though. You also seem to forget tobacco is a drug and people like it because it works. This small little issue will always cause there to be a demand for it as you can not force people to not use something they like and that works.

Yeah, but there are options to go to a more environmentally friendly vehicle, can you switch to a more environmentally and cancerous free cigarette?

Like stated above, cigarettes do nothing but harm, they are not needed.

Check health rates in the few countries that do not add additives to their ciggerettes and then ask that again.
People also can smoke in area's that are either private and or filtered if you wish to go down that route, which is just fucking stupid.

Yeah, I know it has nothing to do with hemp. Just pointing out that there are possible alternatives. Tobacco seems like such a mild drug. I smoked for a few years in highschool mostly because everyone else was too and it did nothing for me. I never felt like I needed it nor did it give me any kind of "lift" or relaxing feeling. Eventually I quit and it was very easy.

I can hear your raspy little smoker voice laden with lung butter and wheezing getting hysterical about the topic and frankly I think it's hilarious. The lengths that you people will go to in defending your vice is limitless.

It IS a menace to the healthcare system and a menace to those around you. I don't smoke. Why is it that when you inconsiderate pricks walk next to me, however, I am forced to either hold my breath or smell and taste your smoke? You are the goddamned smoker, not me!

The "tax everyone or don't tax anyone" argument is old and tired. To deny that tobacco should be heavily taxed is ludicrous. Puff puff pay, bitch.

I use a product, and the government keeps taxing it to 'cover costs' of the use of said product.

People bitch all the time, why is this any different? Just because you don't like smokers/smoking? You are doing the exact same thing the smokers are doing, bitching about smokers bitching about the price of a product.

If you don't like it, ignore it, use that energy towards something useful and the world will be a better place.

I couldn't care less about your addiction.

But you have no fucking idea how much your smoking irritates non-smokers.

Your incessant whining about the fairness of tobacco taxes offends us.
The fact that most of you are inconsiderate about where you smoke offends us.

Hence the problem - they're not capable of doing anything useful except bitch about smokers.
