Ever Advertised In The Yellow Pages?

I'm thinking of starting a home based business. Verizon Yellow Pages comes out in June so I have to hurry quick if I'm going to advertise in there. Anyone have any experience with this? It was hard to get any info yesterday when I called up idearcmedia. They said they would call me back, but never did. I'm wondering if third parties can handle this? What do they usually charge? (They don't list fees on the website.)

From what I know it's a pain in the ass and can be very expensive depending on how big the add is. Here in NC they charge you a full year at first.

yellow pages work, but it all depends on your ad and how much compettiton is in the same field. You have to sign a yearly contract and then pay monthly

I used them for a couple years. Over priced with very poor ROI. I actually found the Pennysaver to be a great source of income. Of course, I guess it depends on the type of business you are going to open.

Thanks for the replies.

Just after I posted this I was finally called back. She wanted to meet me in person, but I told her I just want the prices for now. And they are..

Single line listing: $25/month
Half inch ad: $31/month

I didn't ask for any of the bigger ads. $31 a month would be tops. I don't even know if there'd be a ROI or not. The thing is, my book said that I would get the most clients from advertising in the Yellow Pages. As opposed to door to door fliers or sending out mails. Although, I wonder if it depends on where you live for Yellow Pages to work.

Does anyone have any tips on how to get information out of people by calling up the businesses I'd be competing with in the section of the Yellow Pages where'd I'd be listed?

IMHO...usually I think of the yellow pages for looking up repair or general maintenance stuff. If you are doing anything along those lines, then you should be set.

About 10 years ago I did it for a mobile auto detailing biz and it rocked.

I wouldn't do it for an internet biz though. Unless it's like PC repair or something. that would be perfect.

If the computers broken then you're forced to grab the yellow pages.

Those prices are a lot cheaper than here. Makes me wonder which Yellow Pages it is. Sounds like a brand x company.

it is brand x..Verizon

AT&T Yellow Pages are the real yellow pages and from many years of experience the only ones to advertise with. They have the widest distribution to homes and businesses and thats the most important thing..you have to get them into the peoples hands first. Those other books simply do not have the same distribution network or customer base.
It will be a bit more expensive but they have ads to accommodate any budget.

Your success with depend a lot on the type of biz you have..some businesses by nature are more suited for Yellow Pages ads
for example a window tinting business, people use the yellow pages to call around and compare pricing, check brands, set appointments, ask questions, check on the time their vehicle will be ready...etc. So in a biz like that it pays off big time to have the largest ad you can afford ..the ROI is going to be there.

I personally wouldn't go with a brand x yellow pages in my 1st yr of operation..you want to get your best bang for the buck. Spend any additional ad dollars on flyers and cheap ads in local papers..doesn't take much to see a ROI on those and you dont have to commit to any long term contracts...do it as you can afford it and see what works for your biz.
good luck
