How do you go about finding out if someone is lying about having a college degree?
would like to verify for someone who is applying to work for me.

Ask to see the degree itself or a transcript from the school.
If they really do have the credentials, it shouldn't be too hard to produce them. |

I do not know that an admissions office will verify something like that over the phone. Maybe if you send them a verification letter with company letterhead showing the person applied for a job. I know before I was self employed, I used to have to sign a waiver that allowed a background check, including verifying college information. I do not know if it is mandatory, and such things seem to vary from company and state. But I know when I worked in telco, I had to sign that all three times. |

I believe it varies by state, but it couldn't hurt to get their written permission to verify their references. Then call or email the school to inquire about getting a transcript or verification of graduation for such and such person from x and so year.
