A cameo is just him appearing and saying a line or nothing at all. I would at least wanted a scene or two where he does something important that would at least harken back to his days in the hospital.

judging by the preview I saw after last week's episode it looks like most of the old cast will be back. It looks like Carter does something big (like maybe builds a new ER or something like that) and everyone comes back for the ceremony. They showed shots of Eriq LaSalle (Peter Benton) and the girl that played Carrie Weaver and Abby so I think they will be bringing them all back to where they started and end it with with a new beginning.

I used to watch the show all the time, then about 3-4 years ago I got burnt on it and it started getting bad, but I have been watching again since this is the final season because I wanted to see how they would end it and I am really enjoying it. They have gone out in style.
