I am still a bit annoyed with the "does he look like a terrorist" comment.

One time I took a bus from Toronto to Mexico City, obviously through the USA.

When I crossed the border into the US in Detroit, I got grilled by one of the agents there.

He wanted to know:

How much money I had
How much I thought I needed
How much was in my bank account
How much was on my visa

He then proceeded to tell me that my gold card was "probably maxed out".

I had a couple hundred dollars in cash on me, which he said was not enough, and wanted to send me home.

I wasn't even stopping in the USA, just sitting on various buses as I passed through to Mexico. I told him all I needed to buy was lunch and drinks for the bus ride, and that a few hundred dollars was surely enough to buy lunch for 2 days...

He then read every single page of my notebook, and asked who every name was, if they were real phone numbers, if he called them now would they know me, etc, etc. I have no idea why he needed to read my personal notebook.

He then threatened to send me home, threatened that the customs officers in Texas would not let me through, and also that the Mexico customs officers would not let me into Mexico.

I'm pretty sure he forgot to welcome me to the USA, or tell me that I'd have a great time, or wish me luck on my trip...

This is really nothing new at all.

Several years ago a man was detained in New Orleans for carrying a large amount of cash, I don't remember the amount but it was far in excess of 10k.

He owned a nursery (plants) and was there to buy his season's inventory. He was never charged with a crime yet the money was held and not returned to him. Louisiana at the time, maybe still, gave the Police the power to seize suspicious property, even if no charges were filed.

In Florida former Broward county sheriff Nick Navaro, the same one who went after 2Live Crew, seized several items from people, including one guy's boat, without any charges being filed and then refused to return the items even after being ordered to by a Judge.

Idiots in badges happens all the time, has little to do with the laws, its a combination often of power trips and stupid people in positions of authority.

Here's what I want to know, why is the idea of Ron Paul such an evil thing to so many people? How is this such a bad person to talk about or promote? As far as I can tell he seems like a very educated person that would simply like us to retain our rights to the fullest extent. Yet if you even say his name around the wrong person you're immediately labeled as some insane nutcase.... for whatever reason... I can only feel deep sorrow for the man himself, who has the cleanest most honestly personality and record in office, that his presense brings such negative controversy. It truely is proof that the world is full of backwards morons that don't give a shit about anything except making everyones lives miserable.

A lot of his fan boys kind of ruined it for him. A good local example would be Splum or Pussyman... they bash every little retarded thing that Obama does so everyone gets desensitized to the issues. Then, when a legitimate issue about Obama comes about, nobody can discuss the issue because those two go off on ridiculous tangents.

People did the same thing with Bush. They would bash and bash silly little things, then when a legitimate issue came about, people were too busy fighting with each other to actually discuss that legitimate issue.

Under 10K is the rule. I was at LAX 5 years ago and a korean lady was busted for carrying $20K in cash. She said she was on her way to Vegas.

There is NO 10k law. Doesn't exist.

There is a reporting requirement for banks to report cash transactions over 9 - 10k.

But there is no law that says you can't carry more than 10k.

What Sly said and a little more. Look... Dr. Paul is a very likeable person and what he says DOES make alot of sense if it were the 1930's (before The New Deal or shortly after). It's a matter of practicality... the majority of what he is proposing is just unrealistic because, at this point in time, you couldn't implement them without disrupting the world economy and probably causing it to implode. In addition, he makes a great speech about putting the power back in the states hands in the name of the Constitution... but that isn't practical either... because you would end up with a broken republic and lend credence to movements like the confederacy. Although the framers laid out guidelines for us to follow... they were not omnipotent. There is no possible way for them to have foreseen the world we live in today. I think everyone likes the populist conservative tone that Ron Paul represents... it's just not practical.

13. Mark an X in the Yes or No box. Are you or any family members traveling with you bringing $10,000 or more in U.S. dollars or foreign equivalent in any form into the United States?

Read definition of monetary instruments on the reverse side of the form.
Examples: coins, cash, personal or cashier's check, traveler's checks, money orders, stocks, bonds.

If yes, your must complete the Customs Form 4790.

For anyone wanting to say this is what you can expect from Obama... These policies were put into effect by Bush for the war on drugs. This has about as much to do with Obama as Guantanamo does.

::Sigh:: Wow, did you even read what you posted?

It doesn't say that you can't, just that you must report it.

Besides that this thread was about a man traveling domestically within the US.

Not into or out of the country.

There is no law regarding how much cash you can carry within the US.

Doesn't exist.

What I don't remember posting is an opionion, I just posted the link to the law and quoted what it said.

However your statement was "There is NO 10k law. Doesn't exist." and well, technically that is incorrect. What they are reading is the OR "traveling with you bringing $10,000 or more in U.S. dollars or foreign equivalent in any form into the United State"

So to bring that out, they read this and stop at the OR "traveling with you bringing $10,000 or more in U.S. dollars"

However, that doesn't make it or them correct. And the guy didn't have $10k either, so it's double jacked up.. Prob why nothing happened, but it shows you how much of lying assholes can push things when they have no accountability.

That young man and everyone like him are a credit to the TRUE Constitution of the United States of America! I never have and never will get on a plane for the exact reasons this young man dealt with. I have always traveled by ship/boat or car. Giving up freedoms to go on some archaic technological improvidence that flies without defying gravity waves directly is adding insult to injury. Packing pathetic passengers into those wretched tin cans like sardines to be shuttled over the world, everyone getting in the lines and willfully obeying their shepherds lead as they are agonized with delays, noise, thirst/hunger and severe loss of personal freedoms is not something I EVER want a part of. It actually sounds a lot like what hell might be if I were a dumb christian and believed in such a place. And reminds me of how cows and other animals are treated. People sadly are what they eat. But that's just how I see shit. For the people who actually NEED to fly I really feel for them. This guy struck a blow for freedom in general and that's what counts!
