Google traffic is so steady that it's fucking scary.

Day in, day out...google traffic to one of my websites stays the same.

I'm glad for the traffic, but I can predict the hourly hits.
I can also predict my total daily google hits and never miss by more than 5%.

probably just a weird thing that the same percentage of people enter my search
term every hour. It just doesn't fit into any realistic random model that any math
wiz would know about.

It's paranoia setting in most likely, but wouldn't it be a bitch to wake up one day
to find out that we've all been "had" by google.

Wow, I'm getting jaded to even think this.

Sorry folks, I take it all back.

= with myself.

You're not alone on this. I've heard it from several people including my self. Some sites really get almost exact numbers day in and day out.

I've noticed the same thing that sortie mentions

I think google does it to all sites, but there is some other kinds of variable that can shift things around a bit at times, but there definitely seems to be different traffic categories that different sites are put into for whatever reason, and the serps seem to shift around to keep those constants

it is kind of lame when you think about a search engine supposed to be working on algorithms of seo and searching, that google seems to have added tracking of traffic sent to sites, as if they are giving us a "gift of traffic" that they decide to throttle, not just leaving it up to the chance of the algorithm itself

if you've ever used google analytics (which I avoid like the plague now) you can see it in their not so subtle wording on the site when they say "google sent 16547 non-paid visits via 1100 keywords"

their use of that phrase emphasizing the words "non-paid" for organic search traffic has always bothered me a bit (like they act like they are doing us a favor that they should be charging us for)

Definitely some sort of throttling going on. I launched two sites on the same day, totally different keywords. A month later, I checked both their stats and today they had the exact same number of visitors from Google. Most days they are within 5 to 10 visits of each other. Coincidence? I think not..

hehe ... lol, btw, what amount are you talking about? thousands per day? on my keyword based domains i have almost the same traffic every day, with volume few hundreds daily its about 10% up or down. i dont know if that is strange, people are not that another so one day will be fetishists looking for fetish and another day ... you know what i mean ... it depends on sales, if you are doing sales from that traffic, nothing strange about it ... no paranoia is needed, its just www

actually I think concern is needed, because there is a big difference between an organic search engine that ranks individual pages based on their own merits and the traffic flows organically and freely within page ranking criteria vs. a traffic provider that uses artificial means to funnel traffic to different sites based on a counter system (which may be influenced by the ranking criterias but seeming to take it to another level of Google using criteria to decide the "worthiness" of a site receiving their "gift" of traffic and adjusting things from there)

It certainly seems like it.

My site has gotten almost the exact same number of google hits per day for
two years now.

I mean, I never have a "crappy day" with only half the normal hits;
or a great day with 30% more google hits.

It's always the same.

I initially dismissed this, but looking at the last 4 months on one of my sites, they are sending remarkably consistent traffic, and the site in question has gone up the serps for most of my main target phrases - which would imply the traffic is being throttled somewhat:

(excuse the formatting)

Jan
68 different referring search engines Pages Percent Hits Percent
Google 485167 76.6 % 487166 76 %

Feb
60 different referring search engines Pages Percent Hits Percent
Google 466708 75.8 % 468233 75.5 %

March
67 different referring search engines Pages Percent Hits Percent
Google 521946 75.7 % 523921 75.4 %

April
62 different referring search engines Pages Percent Hits Percent
Google 516085 74.9 % 517908 74.8 %

Not only that, but if you build an organic SEO site from the ground up, they almost always follow the same pattern of growth by reaching different plateaus, staying there for a while before moving on to the next plateau.

But yes, at lower levels there is clearly some sort of throttling mechanism in place. The stats are too perfect.

I think they do it at higher levels too. I am sure they are very aware of how much traffic they send to sites that are at the top positions for lucrative keywords, and they may throttle them for other keywords to an extent.

one thing that can be a piss off is if you spend time creating unique content, and google does not treat each page as an individual in the serps, so your traffic won't necessarily grow linearly (unless of course all factors combine to google letting your site jump to the "next level")

Bottom line really when growing a site, don't just rely on search engine traffic. It accounts for less than 40% of my total traffic.

If you find out that the 40% search traffic accounts for 95% of your sales then would you
still not care?

Of course I care Sortie. I'm just saying don't get too hung up on it.

And I've also had sites totally and utterly shafted by google on a whim, for no reason / explanation whatsoever. Don't put all your eggs in one basket is what I'm getting at.

no, it is completely crazy that every day it is nearly exactly the same... Never double one day over the other....

You may be onto something there. I have analytics installed on a blog of mine, and from day 1 right up till now (close to 12 months) it tells me I have a steady stream of between 950 and 1000 hits. No more, no less. I've often thought that this just can't be right because just as someone said, humans aren't that predictable.

Interesting thread, I have wondered the same thing about Google traffic.

It looks like Google gets the same visitors everyday searching for the same things every day.

It's mind boggling

Maybe it's like socialism for search engines. Maybe Google thinks it's not fair that the top 10 sites get all the clicks, so if you're on page 20 and you're getting no traffic, you'll be thinking what's the point so Google says, the top sites can only have so many hits and the rest we'll share out, which it does by bumping you up a few pages every 1000 searches or whatever. The caring sharing search engine!

I get pretty steady traffic from google on one of my tgps... it's not a shitload of traffic but it's steady. I don't skim SE traffic at all... This is for the last week.

Here's my traffic from the last four months, including total unique visits per day, google, msn, ask, and yahoo unique visits per day.

Kind of strange how everything else goes up but google just bobs up and down. I did a ton of changes SEO wise, resubmitted my sitemap a few times, maybe the cause in the drop... who knows...

January 31
Total: 1,844
Google: 1,320
MSN: 8
Ask: 0
Yahoo: 2

February 28
Total: 1,897
Google: 1,590
MSN: 12
Ask: 3
Yahoo: 5

March 31
Total: 7,204
Google: 1,740
MSN: 20
Ask: 58
Yahoo: 7

April 28
Total: 13,979
Google: 1,337
MSN: 84
Ask: 77
Yahoo: 45

Here's the last couple of weeks worth of G sourced traffic for one of my sites... there are a few million pages indexed so I'm not sure whether that makes a difference. G referred traffic has been at about 30-35k daily for several months, but in that time the number of indexed pages has increased steadily. Maybe the crawler is good at determining the important pages and has left the obscure ones until last.

I also get the same amount of google hits every day, on multiple sites. It only changes when I move up or down some positions.

I'm not going to imply for a minute that google isnt going to send great traffic but I think your best business strategy is to not depend on it as the sole engine to drive your business because they can change their algo ect and then all your cashflow dries up. best to have a diverse marketing strategy.

Same goes for people who rely solely on adsense...

(I can't talk since I'm inexperienced with mainstream, and adsense is currently my only source of income in that area. :D )

Yeah especially when they credit themselves with sending you the hit
where surfers typed in domain.com into the browser address bar. They think because they have a toolbar installed they own this so called "traffic" quite interested if they count the bookmark clicks as well just to pad the percentage stats of google traffic in their reports..
