I lived there for two years just prior to returning home to Denver last summer.

They have one of the best if not the very best transit systems in the US.

As for the weather, it will rain and rain and then rain some more all winter long. My first winter there it literally rained once for three weeks straight. I'm talking 24 hours a day without even a moment's break. They get more days of rain than Seattle. You learn to get used to it. You have to.

Once Summer hit, there was nowhere else I wanted to be. Absolutely beautiful! Fall is terrific too. The colors change and they stay for what seemed like months as they rarely get hard freezes.

You have the mountains, the ocean, a nude beach on the Columbia River, & Seattle too a fairly quick drive away.

As for the people, it's populated with overeducated/underemployed humorless hipsters who all think they're the latest greatest thing.

It is the whitest major city in America. No joke. There really are no black or Hispanic people. I seriously think I saw three in two years. OK, maybe 4.

If you've ever been to Boulder, CO or Berkeley, CA, multiply that feel by 10.

PDX Dress Code = Black hoodie and full beard for men and a black hoodie and no bra for women.

Seth has it pretty much nailed. My bro lives their and I visit all the time.

Coming from Chicago, the all whiteness of the town is almost shocking and actually a bit of a turn off. Everyone has an air of self satisfaction, maybe it's just me, but you can almost feel it everywhere you go. It gets old but I guess it depends on where you are coming from. Some people might not even notice it, but if you come from blue collar roots, you'll feel it.

Summer is awesome there, great weather, so much within driving distance, and probably the cleanest major city you will ever visit.

Winter is all rain though.

Pretty cheap.

I've lived here most of my life.
Basically as Seth said we have a good transit system as long as you don't want to venture too far from the Portland Metro area. If you do there are buses to take you there, it just might take awhile. As with any mass transit system you will have to learn to deal with the tweekers and weirdos as well.

Weather is pretty cool. We seem to get 4 different seasons. Spring we have rain then sun then rain then sun. Summer is warm (but the humidity can get a little high some times) and the temp sticks around in the 80's with some days getting up higher. We seem to always have a couple of weeks in the upper 90's, but for most of the summer it is in the 80's. Fall is amazing. Still kind of warm and amazing colors. Winter is cold, wet and gray. Lots of rain and we do get a few days of snow.

As for stuff to do if you like the outdoors you will love it. Portland is an hour from a major ski resort one way and an hour the other way to the beach. There is also some of the best wind surfing in the world. Plenty of lakes and rivers for fishing and boating and a ton of trails for hiking/mountain biking. We have a good local music scene and some good art and a nice amount of independent movie theaters so you can see art house style movies if you are into that (of course a tone of other theaters as well for regular movies.) We also have one of the best book stores in the world.

The people are usually pretty cool but there are some areas of the city that are very "hip" and if you aren't into that scene they kind of look down on you. But otherwise I have found the people to be pretty cool. Sadly we do have a lot of meth heads and tweekers, but they are easy to avoid. We also have a larger than normal amount of mental people because Portland is very liberal (one of the most liberal cities in the nation) so we have a lot of programs to help disabled/mental/troubled people so they flock here.

Anyway, that is my take on the city. I love it here and don't have any desire to live anywhere else. It isn't for everyone though. It seems most people either love or hate it.

Where is this nude beach located? A buddy of mine told me about it when we were driving on 84 into Portland but I didn't believe it really existed because he didn't know much about it.

We actually have 2 nude beaches... Collins Beach, Sauvie Island and Rooster Rock State Park... but this ain't the south of France. There more like gay guy hang outs. I met boneprone @ Rooster rock.

I never went to Rooster Rock because I heard it was just a big naked cruising area. Collins beach on Sauvie Island is only that way if you make it that. My partner and I spent many days there and never had a problem with the other gay dudes.

Like most other beaches I've ever been to, there are also certain areas that are more gay than others just like there are areas that tend to be where the families with kids hang out.

I spent a fair amount of time on the giant nude beach in San Diego , Blacks Beach too and overall the beach on Sauvie Island is much nicer. It's easer to get to, and is dog friendly.
