Totally depends on your area and what the isp is offering in most cases. I'll take DSL over cable modem in my area however.

I think that would depend on your location. Proximity to exchange. What plan you got. Etc Etc

cable (lower ping higher speeds since has no saturation as adsl that cuts of 15-20% of the top speed)

idiots

cable is always capable of faster speeds than DSL

FIOS is currently the fastest if its available although comcast has announced 50mbit/sec to all its customers by mid 2010

Cable is way faster than DSL in most cases. That is why they came up with FIOS.

In my area

AT&T DSL max speed 6 Mbps/512 kbps
Charter internet 20 Mbps/2 Mbps

Naturally I have Charter. I have had both. Both have worked fine for me.

It's very simple.

Faster? Cable.
Reliable and durable? DSL.

I use cable, and a T1 for my office. That way I am never completely down. I have had more grief with my cable over the years then with my T1. While a T1 is not DSL. I used to work in telco for 8 years. Both business, and residential.

I stand by my statement.

Sig.

DSL here goes up to 20Mbit downstream and 1Mbit upstream (approx.) and is very stable.
CABLE here goes up to 120Mbit downstream and 20Mbit upstream (approx.) and is not always reliable in speed or connectivity.
Getting both would be best

Speak for yourself.

Maybe where you live, but certainly not anywhere in CA that I have any personal experience with.

Correct. I have worked in a number of markets, and DSL has always been more stable then cable. Even with the different cable providers, and different telco's I worked for.

Cable is on a loop, and a lot of your speed is based on the usage of that loop in your neighborhood. If you have a lot of saturation, you are not going to get your top speeds. Plus you can get a lot of variance.

DSL is like a peer to peer, or point to point phone line or data circuit in a way (trying to explain simply). You have a direct connection from the CO to your house. No bandwidth sharing on that line. So it is more reliable and stable. Even if you are 2+ miles out from the CO. You may not get your top speed, but your speed will remain fairly constant.

Note:
BD was in telco as well, so I am trying to address his point, yet not get into all the industry jargon.

I'd say more often than not cable's better, but as others have said it does depend on location.

Where I live Cable is the way to go.

I got 50mbit/1mbit up for $79 a month, can't beat it. I can count in one hand how much downtimes I've had in the last 4 years.

I have DSL in some of my stores, down at least an hour a day and can't change because cable doesn't provide commercial in certain areas.
