Riding motorocyle without full face helmet?

Here you go, actual 3D Cat scan rendering of the structural damage to the face of a rider without a full helmet. Look at the front of the mandible (jaw) it's completey snapped in half.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/roentge...7601198404570/

I wonder how long it will take some ignorant bastard to jump in this thread an insist that in fact full face helmets are MORE dangerous because they break your neck? Before you do, think of what a wholey stupid argument that is and just don't post it.

I like a full face helmet more due to the fact that it keeps wind, flying rocks & road debris and other flying shit from smacking me in the face at 130 MPH, thus greatly reducing my chances of an accident.

i don't think it's going to help me if a garbage truck pulls out in front of me though

It's even better when someone has a little tiny beenie helmet on, then they have goggles and a bandana covering their face. So your face is in fact still covered, just not by anything that will suck up any damage if you happen to end up sliding along it. Brilliant.

Something is better than nothing, but you won't catch me getting on a bike without a full face helmet.

For safety reasons, one should certainly go fullface. Though if you really want to be safe, don't leave your house.

If someone wants to ride without a helmet, doesn't matter to me any. Not my life.

I once saw a guy doing wheelies on the highway wearing board shorts and a wifebeater... But he did have a full face helmet

a bandanna is not going to do shit if a small rock gets kicked up on the highway by a car in front of you

and most riders wear sunglasses and not goggles, and a 90mph rock direct into a pair of sunglasses, may save your eye somewhat from damage but it's still going to hurt like a motherfucker as well as a good chance to cause you to wreck

Many years ago there was a user on GFY who posted photos of a guy who was missing more than half of the lower part of his face (missing his jaw, nose, cheek bones, etc). You literally just had a clear view of the back of his tonsils, and his eyes. The guy was alive, too. Just sitting in the ER.

Terrible sort of thing to have happen. I'm not entirely sure what the emergency room people would do with you at that point. They might just bid you farewell, for the most part.

They don't have a helmet law in my state, and motorcyclist are not the type to wear a helmet unless they're forced to. No offense bikers, but you guys are rebels by nature.

Eat it face first one time, and it'll be the last time you ride.

Haha that's probably one of the better arguments for why someone should wear a face. If you tell someone "you will get in a crash and rip off half of your face," most people aren't going to believe that or they will simply say "not me, I'm a good rider." However, all you need to do is point out how many cracked windshields you see driving down the street and that should make someone at least think. If debris can crack a hard windshield just from driving around town, imagine what that would do to your face?

Years ago I had a van that had a cracked windshield... got it replaced. Not one week later it was already cracked again. Damn rocks.

I didn't see where it said he was wearing a helmet of any kind. As a matter of fact the first sentence says:

"This patient was not using a helmet."

But hey it's all worth it for his "freedom" to not ride with a helmet right? see this is where people get all fucked up in the head. Some people think by "forcing" them to wear a helmet you are taking away their freedom. No we are trying to save your ass and also save the taxpayers money because we all know this motherfucker is not going to end up paying for 99% of his medical bills, WE are. And I'm sorry but if I'm paying your bills I can tell you WTF to do. If not then you can go fuck yourself and live on the street

I remember reading that those skid lid type helmets don't do anything at all actually.

A full face helmet is more structurally sound and it also stays in place. That tiny chin strap on a half shell helmet will not keep it in place during a hard a wreck. Some people don't realize how violent a real crash is and the forces involved. That little half helmet will rip right off before you even hit the ground.

I have Airoh full-face helmet always on my head even when I go to the local store. Fuck it, life is to short and there are to many drunk idiots on the road. I also always wear motorcycle jacket with protectors and gloves. Simply don't want to end up in ER.

Motorbikes are dangerous enough without riding with a full helmet on. My best friends cousin was killed in a motorbike accident. You would never catch me on one let alone without a full helmet. I have 3 friends who ride them tho and love their bikes. My brother booked lessons, paid a deposit for $200 non refundable, I asked him to not do it until he was older (he's 22 now but was 20 at the time) I even paid him his deposit he had paid for it so he didnt lose money.

I'm happy to say my brother now is seeing my point of view and doesnt want to learn to ride a motorbike anymore which I am happy about.

I hang out on Main Street to get pics and I'd say 90% don't wear helmets and the 10% that do are half or those tiny caps. Full face are the least worn of all.

I looked real quick for one of my shots looking down main street so you could see what I'm talking about but I couldn't find one that showed a lot of bikers at one time.

So should we be wearing full helmuts in cars also. Ive been riding for 15 years wearing peanut cap, when I ride. When its your time to get it, it wont matter what you wear. Maybe we should wear helmuts when walking in busy cities also.

when it comes to bikes i'm a complete pussy. I never ride without at very least jeans, a jacket and of course a full face helmet. I can count the number of times i've been on a bike with running shoes on one hand as well.

You take a chance riding a motorcycle just like you take a chance walking out the front door every morning to go to work... You don't want to wear a helmet, that's fine just be prepared to deal with the reprecussions that come with it *WHEN* you go down... Because every serious rider out there knows that you're either "going down" or have "been down".

That is sort of idiotic. In a car your already surrounded by steel, air bags, and such - not to mention you are secured via a seat belt.

The whole when its your time line is just to funny to ponder. Suppose you would have to already believe that there is a set time for you to die in the first place if you actually think what you said, which if you do then you should be able to do everything in the world you desire without any concern for safety already.

The idea that safety gear does not matter is well fucking stupid. I personally have prevented numerous severe injuries due to safety equipment and or gear. Most everyone here also would say the same.

Of course if you really believe in the whole "when its your time" crap. What happens when it is not your time but some other idiots time and they hit you. You end up all fucked up and the only thing the doctors can say is well if he was wearing his helmet he more than likely would not be drooling applesauce and wearing diapers right now.

My helmet from 3 years ago:

It doesnt look that bad, but I still bruised 1/3rd of my brain, broke my left eye socket, and moved my upper teeth.

I wouldnt want to imagine that impact with one of those skid lid open face helmets.

I may wear an open face helmet if I'm riding my cruiser down the street to grab a burger. But if I'm on my sport bike or my sport touring bike on the hiway, I wear nothing less than a full face helmet, riding pants with under armor, triple-stitched gauntlet gloves, a riding jacket, and race boots.

Oh man, painful thread to read... Helmet laws are erratically enforced here. What's worse, I've seen whole families (5 people) on one motorcycle. Father in the Middle, youngest kids up front, wife in the back. Crazy shit. Apparently, there's a bill seeking to make this illegal. Good start. Enforcement is key though.

Personally I don't believe in helmet laws at all. I think those stupid enough to ride without helmets should aboslutely be allowed to remove themselves from the gene pool. More power to them!

I won't ride without a full-face shield, if nothing else because of the flying bugs and crap. I live in New York, so we don't have that many bugs... but still, you hit a bumblebee at 80+ mph and you know it. I don't know how people ride down south... I'd hate to run into a swarm of palmettos or other giant mutant southern bugs. Yuck.

stats-
Helmet use among fatally injured motorcyclists is below 50 percent

Single vehicle motorcycle crashes account for about 45 percent of all motorcyclist fatalities.

Half of the fatalities are related to negotiating a curve prior to the crash

umm, learn how to ride.

Terrible sort of thing to have happen. I'm not entirely sure what the emergency room people would do with you at that point. They might just bid you farewell, for the most part.
What ended up happening to him? did he survive?

Almost one third of the fatally injured operators did not have a proper license

I wonder how long it will take some ignorant bastard to jump in this thread an insist that in fact full face helmets are MORE dangerous because they break your neck? Before you do, think of what a wholey stupid argument that is and just don't post it.
Thats like people saying steel toed boots are worse because it can sever your toes...

Sorry you believe my beliefs are stupid but I believe death is pre determined for everyone.
I live my life the way I want and if it kills me , so be it. Ill die happy.

As far as cars ... being surrounded in steel.. well maybe 40 years ago but cars are tin cans now.

Should bicycle riders wear full helmets. If no.. why not as they ride in the streets with the other nmanics and have less chance of getting out of the way of a car than a motorcylce. ]

When its your time, you cant run, you cant hide, its time. Thats just my humble opinion.

Doesnt matter, what about the people in your well protected steel automobiles that are dismembered, crippled, burned alive because they cant get thier seatbelt off...

If helmets are so safe, why is it illegal to wear one while driving a car? There are a hell of a lot more head injuries in car accidents than motorcycle accidents.

Don't get all butt hurt, I fully support your right to wear nothing on your head at all.

We all should be able to value our brains, faces and what have you accordingly. If it's worth it for you to have the wind rushing over your ears and face for the possible trade of having your face ground off one day, by all means be my guest.

Baddog, are you really going to try and argue helmets are less safe? Really?
