:mad What kind of snake is this? [pics]

Found this guy right below my deck, lying on top of the leaves. Tried to look up what kind of snake it is but the only thing I could find, looks like a Massasauga, a posionious rattler I think.

Yup, chopped his head off as you can see in the 2nd picture. I don't know a thing about snakes except that I don't want them around my house or my dog.

Few people said it looks bigger in the picture. The snake was young and maybe 8-11"

That is a common milk snake. They look like the Massasauga Rattler and even can rattle their tail to scare predators off.

Here's one thing you should know. That snake ate mice and now that he's dead there will be more mice around your house and while the snake only wanted to eat the mice, the mice want to get in your kitchen cabinets and nibble at your food.

While that might be true that snake would have ate maybe ONE mouse a month maybe 2 mice. Do you have any idea how fast mice breed? A cat would be much bettter mouse controll than a snake.

The point is it's not a danger to humans unless it's trapped and provoked and by eating mice which are considered pests it serves a useful purpose. Killing a snake is just plain ignorant.

I agree you shouldn't kill non-dangerous snakes BUT if I'm outside and especially if kids are around and I see a snake and I'm not sure then I'm killing it.

I have them up on the farm. They like hanging out in the rock rows between the horse paddocks. Pretty much harmless as they prefer to hide out in the rocks and catch field mice.

Exactly. I have no clue what kind of snake it is. I have to get under my deck anyway to fix the lag bolts and I'll be dammed if im crawling under there with snakes living there or having them around my dog - she's stupid enough to try and eat it!

It doesn't look like a Massasauga; it doesn't look like it has a rattle or a diamond shaped head from what I can tell.

Good thing as you would have killed an endangered species.

i would also not be nice to something that looks dangerous to me or anything living in or near my house. if the snake looks dangerous, kill it for sure, you cannot know how fast it is and what it can do for you. be nice to snake or spider and enjoy death, thats not good for sure ...

Non-dangerous snakes? Never heard of them. If they wont hurt me...they'll make me hurt myself getting out of their way...

Milk snakes are red tone colored. That in the pic is a common Garter snake, we have them all over in Florida. Harmless to humans, but they will fuck with you pets if they get to close.
We keep them off the lawn using the repellent you can buy at Lowes and Home Depot.

Not a garter. They are green with a few stripes that run the length of the body.

Its either a northern river snake or a water moccasin (dependin' on where you live).

http://lib.oh.us/snake/fact%20pages/...sin_water.html

I shot this one awhile back - its a northern river snake.

You can tell by the pattern and the scales that it's not a water moccasin which also have a distinct triangular head.

Compare the pattern of the snake in his picture to this one of a milk snake http://www.umass.edu/nrec/snake_pit/pages/milk.html

Usually a milk snake has more red in it which is why I thought it might be a Pine snake but this looks like a young one and location might have something to do with it as well. A picture of the belly scales and pattern would have been a big help in identifying it.

How could anyone be mad for him killing that snake? Unless he's a snake expert (which obviously he isn't) how could he know this was not a dangerous/poisonous snake? I would personally kill first and ask questions later. Same goes for spiders or any other potentially dangerous critter sneaking in my house!

The only problem with that is the snake it resembles is the Massasauga Rattler, which is listed as an endangered species. And honestly, it doesn't resemble it all that closely.

Non-Poisonous snakes usually have round eyes and not the reptile-like pupils of poisonous snakes.
