How long can web 2.0 hold out?
I say 2010 sees the end of lets lose 100 mil a quarter to give people fun interactive websites. Myspace is dying, I see twitter as going that. I know "you" are making big cash there but they are not. I like and use facebook but I do not currently pay them for that priviledge so how are they making it?
One of these guys is going to hit the wall when they need to borrow again to keep going and that will be that. |

I hope it dies out soon. Those sites are all a plague on humanity.

My favorite part about web 2.0 sites like facebook is people will say "i'm addicted to facebook" or "I can't live without facebook" yet as soon as facebook tries to make a few bucks with ads, all the users revolt...lol.
But yes, someone smart is going to need to come along and figure out how to make real money with one of these sites. The problem is they are so based on being trendy, you have to make your money early, not later as they all try to do. Facebook will be replaced as will Twitter as the "it" websites the same way Myspace is slowly being phased out and losing it's cool factor. Someone on GFY compared these sites to nightclubs and it was a good comparison. The difference is a trendy nightclub makes a shitload of cash the first few months then just shuts down, these sites don't make any money at first, which they have to do in a trend based marketplace.

Wasn't one of the revenue streams from Facebook supposed to be data mining?
The idea of investing millions into a website idea with little returns has been around for what... 12 years now? I can't imagine that all of the investors have completely forgotten the dot com bomb, but who knows... people have short memories when flashing dollar signs pop into their eyes.

The sites get pushed into scale rather than profitability.
craigslist has ~20 ppl, has that fake community bullshit shtick and is a cash machine... facebook and myspace are busy trying to be the next yahoo without the revenue. |

They will last as long as they can find people to buy ad space
![]() I would assume productivity for those spots would definitely start dying down after another year or so.

Have you checked out their ad interface? It's pretty slick with the demographics targeting, and I know a lot of people running profitable campaigns through it, matching their adwords spending...

The major problem with these sites is that they are trying to use advertising that is as old as the internet. Someone out there could help these idiots monetize their sites without changing much of anything, they just don't ever seem to find that someone.
If a spammer can pull $10,000 per week out of MySpace just playing around then MySpace should be able to pull enough to get in the black. It never seems to happen and it makes me sick. |

Which is the inverse of web 1.0 - which was to make a fairly pointless application AFTER taking someone's money.
