Need Camera Suggestions from the Experts

I need to get some recommendations for a really good camera. We've got a few international trips coming up and would like to have a high quality camera to finally take some nice pictures. (The old Coolpix just isn't going to cut it) If it has the ability to take some short movie clips..that would be great too.

Thanks for your help!

Nikon d90 is a good place to start off imo if you are looking for an upper entry level dslr.

I have a d60 which I would recommend, but you want video and I think you have to step up to the d90 for that. Should shoot fine for you even just on auto settings.

Hey, go visit http://www.canon.com/eos-d/ and consider the 500d as a sweet tool for anyone starting out, shoots 10 mp and true HD video, around a grand. The little canon handheld jobbies have some great features as well for around $200. Depends what route you want to go.

checking it out - thanks

I've got two of the smaller little cameras. They're not bad for convenience, but they've been so-so on the quality front. Want to have something that will take more in depth architectural pictures as well and as the ability to take pictures of animals (photo safari in south africa later this year)

you are going at it the wrong way

you need a video camera that can also take some pics, memories are best on video

get a HD small cam that stores its content on a hard drive you can always grab photos off it, why have still image memories of stuff?

You can't go wrong with a d90.

Back in the 80s I would've agreed. I bought my first Sony 8mm vidcam sometime in the mid-80s and shot a LOT of video back in the day.

I've not looked at those old tapes in decades. I just find still pics much quicker and easier to look back at.

I'd say if possible, shoot both...but I'd put most emphasis on photos.

I'm mostly just looking to have video being an additional feature on the camera that will probably only be used for the animals.

Like you, the pictures are what I look at. I've got some amazing video footage from Alaska, and only looked at it twice since the trip back in 2005. (of course, it would have been nice to know that the video camera I bought didn't have the capability of computer download.) But the pictures are on my computer and I go back and look at them from time to time.

Plus, I use the pictures for some of my sites.

Video quality is nothing like photo quality, regardless of what anyone tells you. Get a video camera for your vids and a photo camera for your photos. Treat each one differently.

Photos evoke memories differently than videos do. I wouldn't ever replace a photo cam with one that was intended for vids.

Look at the Nikon and Canon range from $1000-2500. If you are comfortable with interchangable lenses, go for it. Otherwise, get a simple one like a Canon Rebel. Good pictures are due mostly to the person behind the camera, not because of the camera.

Just bought that one (the T1i), but haven't used it a lot yet... just some test shots. The 1080 video is 20fps only, but it does shoot a full 30 fps at 720. Ordered a new lens, and have a shoot scheduled for next week, so we'll see how it is after that... but looks good so far.

dSLR-s don't have video capture options (at least not real ones),
so this leaves you with 2 options

1. dsl + video camera
2. cheaper camera with video capture option

There's new Nikon D5000 that is dslr and has video capture,
but I really didn't had chance to test it so I can't really recommend you that...

It's the intricate details, like the photos on the above gallery, that I'm looking for. I haven't found that kind of high definition in the small little $200 cameras. For my food shots, that's something I need.

d90 even with just the kit lens should do fine, and you can always step up on lens later if you need wider angles, better macro or whatever.
