How far does American dollars go in the Philippines?

I'm outsourcing some work and getting price quotes. How far does $100 american dollars go over there? Is that like a month of rent for them?

and do they speak English really well there?

$100 could get a very small apartment. $200 is like minimum wage.

its cheaper, but you will pay for what you get. ive tried outsourcing a few things and turned out to be complete crap from design to programming, then had to hire someone else to fix it

$200 is for a rent of a apartment in the city, i think $500 a month well enough to live in a normal way in the city..

I pay ~$600 a month for managed guys and they do a fantastic job.

I pay $8 an hour to a guy that was making $2.50 an hour at his full time gig... He just quit his full time gig to work more for us... He's a designer, css, flash guy, and he started using a programmer to help him do some php banners and stuff. I'm happy.

Word. Save yourself from headache, go for Eastern European programmers. Price might be a little steeper, but they're better in what they do and have discipline with genuine desire to deliver the best of their skill. You?d have to be suicidal or have way too much money to waste to outsource Filipinos.

It really depends on what you need the person to do. If you have the time to train them and explain EXACTLY what you need, then hiring someone in the Philippines is a good idea.

Since it's your first time, I would go with an outsourcing company because they make sure to get someone with the qualifications you need which by the way you also have to be very specific about. They also give them all the tools they need such as reliable internet connection, decent computer, etc. Plus they supervise them so you know that you're actually paying for them to work and not just site on their ass.

Finally, all of these perks of course will cost you more than just hiring someone on your own but until you learn the ropes, it will save you from bad experiences.
