It shows that spending 120K for a piece of paper makes you no better than a high school drop out. What I can't understand is how people live these days with the cost of living so high.

The attitude with college grads is very crappy.

I am a partner in a local biz and was looking for a person to hire, was more than willing to give a local college grad a chance at it, we offered a more than fair starting wage with raise in 3 months if he was as good as he said.
He turned us down flat, he wanted top dollar from day one, keep in mind this dude has NO experience at all, just the education.

So to this day he is still unemployed and will probably remain that way for a long time to come. Its a good thing mommy and daddy let him live with them still.

Interesting point but I guess the 80% rate should be taken in context of the "normal" unemployment rate for recent grads in past decades.

They're educated idiots. I'll go to college for a few years get a bullshit degree in something meaningless, start life with 30,000 debt and get a job flipping burgers.

Oy.

I disagree. The kids with the degrees will be much better off long term than the kids without, as a whole.

I think this statistic is more a function of these kids being "recent" grads, and therefore looking for their 1st job at a time when nobody is hiring, in fact most companies are laying people off.

I imagine the unemployment statistics for "recent high school dropouts" is pretty bad too.

Here's an interesting graph for you.

Of course the majority of people with education will be better off, but still does not make them a better worker...they are just qualified. Most kids in college are drunk on drugs and catching std's these days anyway. When I work with some of these kids they seem to lack basic common sense...but know some math equation that they will never use throughout life.

I regret only 1 thing in my life and that is not going to college, and at 42 it still crosses my mind.

It's never too late, man. I'm thinking of getting a second advanced degree. Not because I need it for a job but because I want the added education. One cannot get enough education, I always say.

One of the problems I see is that the unemployed that are getting benefits have no reason to take any of the jobs available.

They take home more on unemployment than if they were working, there are help wanted/now hiring signs all over around here. Now that the benefits have been extended why go get a job??

Granted these are not the highest jobs on the ladder but why even try when you don't have to.

They dont need to be unemployed most graduating now have a sense of entitlement and think the jobs they can get are "under them".

There are some serious mixed emotions in this thread vis a vis education.

One guy says that it's "wasting 120k for a piece of paper that makes you no better off than a high school dropout", and then the same guy says later "he regrets not going to college and at 42 is still thinking about doing it"

WTF??

I'll agree that college isn't "necessary" to be successful, especially if you're an entrepreneur, but to think that you're somehow better than someone who went to college because you were successful without it, is pretty stupid.

hate? more like reality, just so happens everyone I know who is worth serious money and is young did not go to no college.

The people who hate are the people who did go to college and have shit to show for it, those are the people who sit on forums all day and correct peoples spelling and grammar, last time I checked good spelling and grammar doesn't affect your bank balance.

Those who sat their asses day in and out in college, dreaming up what they will do once they are done, talking about their pipe dreams to their friends and family just to finish college to discover their friends who didnt go are running real companies and making real money, those are the people who have hate.

Here are some billionaires who didnt go or didnt finish any college, maybe if they did they would of been as successful as you?

Bill Gates, Larry Ellison (Oracle), Paul Allen, Michael Dell, Richard Branson (Virgin Atlantic etc. Didnt finish high school), Steve Jobs, David Geffen (didnt know hes worth over 4 billion, oh wait thats because I didnt go to college).

http://www.pennylicious.com/2006/10/...aire-dropouts/

Its all about motivation, dedication and 0 procrastination, tell the story about how important college is needed to the 1000's of Italians, Jews, Russians, Chinese, Greek etc people who came to the USA barely speaking english and all they had was the clothing they had on them and within years became very successful.

Alot of that is true, but can't we agree that these people we're talking about would have been successful no matter what, because they're just wired that way, and so in their case education didn't play a major role.

But 99% of the population is going to end up working for someone else, as opposed to being an entrepreneur, and those 99% are going to be much better off with a college degree. The statistics just bear that out. People with 4 year degrees have much higher average incomes and a much much lower unemployment rate than people without.

BTW, did you get the email I sent you yesterday?

It's quite simple actually, for those that didn't go to college options are pretty limited. It's either:
a.) struggle your whole life, by having some shitty $10/hr job
b.) take a shot at good life, by working your ass off, taking a risk, starting some business, etc

For college grads it looks much better:
a.) find a job and live comfortably
b.) work your ass off, take a risk, start a business, etc to live a little more comfortable life

Option "b", doesn't look that great anymore, why take a risk, etc, when you are doing alright as is?

You forget about people who go into trade work who make 15 to 35 an hour without going to college.

So maybe the guy without an education is a more motivated entrepreneur because the life he'll have to go back to if he fails isn't that appealing?

going thru many emails and I did get yours thanks

well did you ever notice that self made millionaires in many cases have kids that are the total opposite, don't want to work, lazy etc?

thats because they rely on their parents and it allows them to be lazy.

many people walk around with their degree and think this is all I need, they rely on it to much.

as time goes on more and more companies dont give a shit about degrees but rather want specific talent and proof they can do what they say they can vs. here is a paper trust me.

just like you say those people would of been successful no matter what I can guarantee you that many guys who went to college and are not successful is because they relied on it to much and cant think outside the box, tons of kids who go to college only do so to please their parents.

People get very creative when they have nothing to rely on, its why many people when they reach a total bottom they can do amazing things.

My point in all this blabble is that right now and I mean right now there is EXTREME opportunities out there for the few that are left who are dedicated and motivated, to do things on your own or with teams that are all in a seriously motivated mind set, but its very few who take advantage of times like this, the world is full of people who have stories how they coulda shoulda woulda, college or no college its a great time now, when the markets turn around those who gave it all right now will shine.

Its all about innovation, those who innovate can kick the biggest fortune 100 companies asses.

Think about the following:

Amazon.com a company founded in mid 90's took on barnes and noble a company founded in 1873! and amazon now has the lead

Netflix founded in late 90's kicked blockbusters ass a company that was started in 1985

Apple comes out with a ipod and destroys entire industries like cd players, cd's etc all because they where thinking outside the box, they did the same with the iphone, they didnt give a shit that they are not a company in the phone business, they figured out unique technology to make life easier for people and gave giants that had a hold on that business like motorola, samsung etc a run for their money

These are extreme examples the point being is that if you think outside the box, and come to market quick and powerful you can really take over a % of a billion dollar industry.

I oversimplified the situation on purpose to make the point clearer. The point being that in general, college grads have less motivation to succeed. And it's not really all about the $$ either, sure, a toll booth attendant may make $60k/year, but it's a pretty un-fulfilling and somewhat hazardous job. Not sure about you, but I would rather work in an office as an accountant or engineer, etc for 60k per year, than collect tolls like a trained monkey for the same amount of $$.

For those of you who have been successful (or plan to be successful) without a college degree, let me ask you this.

Do you have kids, and if so, do you want them to go to college? Are you saving money to pay for their education?

This group of people that EscortBiz mentioned
Bill Gates, Larry Ellison (Oracle), Paul Allen, Michael Dell, Richard Branson, Steve Jobs, David Geffen.

Did they send their kids to college?

I agree with you.

I have college degree and worked in 2 companies so far , worked my job perfectly fine but my monthly salary was lower in comparison with the salary of older staff in those companies but without proper qualification for their work .

Anyway i worked 9 months till i saw that nobody appreciate my work and i left !

Now i'm working full time freelance and i'm earning almost 3 times the salary i earned in those companies ( so fuck so called "bosses" who only want to use you as a tool ) ofcourse not all of them are the same .

I personally feel that the bachelors/masters degree only shows that the guy has motivation to finish what he started (ie. college). Of course degrees also show that the individual has some sort of intrest in the line of work he got the degree from, but I would never hire someone based on a degree alone.

I personally finished my school even though I thought it was pure nonsense and bullshit, but I finished it anyhow. I don't expect to do anything with the degree, I founded my second company while in college, did my thesis in college for my own company etc.. but that's besides the point :P. People think they can make like €3500 per month right out of the same school I graduated from, and in reality they can't even get a job, and if they can it's like a cashier at a store.

But 99% of the population is going to end up working for someone else, as opposed to being an entrepreneur, and those 99% are going to be much better off with a college degree. The statistics just bear that out. People with 4 year degrees have much higher average incomes and a much much lower unemployment rate than people without.

I totally agree with you %100. What college also says is that this person can be trained and has follow through skills.

Its all about motivation, dedication and 0 procrastination, tell the story about how important college is needed to the 1000's of Italians, Jews, Russians, Chinese, Greek etc people who came to the USA barely speaking english and all they had was the clothing they had on them and within years became very successful.

Ok let me define these people that you listed above. They are all self motivators with an inner drive for success that cannot be taught. Those are very far and between. People like that are born or have had some kind of adversity in life that drives them. Those kind of people will do well in any kind of business environment.

College gives people the basic tools they need to compete in the work place against other people with the same skill set in the same work environment. I feel that you always need to be an employee before you can be the boss. In BJJ we call it "need to be the nail, before you can be the hammer". I have done internships at companies that would never hire people with out work experience or education . I got incredible amounts of work experience through college internships. I have worked at radio stations, Tv stations, PR and Advertising firms and did photo journalism for the LA Times. This was all made possible through college and teacher recommendations. I made the most out of my time in college. Got opportunities opened up to me that otherwise were closed off.

I am pretty street smart and savvy. I saw all of my friends were going to college and did not want to miss out. Parents money for me to go to school?? I got kicked out of the house when i was 17. There was no help from mommy or daddy. So I figured out how to get my college education and get paid for it. I got the state to pay for my education and books via state grants and i made a shit load for being latin via scholarships. I applied for every scholarship offered and was making way more money in school than if i had a real job. I figured out the system and made it work for me. I used that same system and got both of my younger brothers educated with no debt. One graduated from Law school (partial scholarship and had some debt from law school only). The other from film school (zero debt).

I am a self motivator and a college graduate and i value both equally. I use my education everyday and i always have a burning drive inside to work hard and go after my goals and objectives. Why? Because i know that my competition is not.

As far as Escortbiz, come one man you are a rare breed that may not have a degree, but you are highly educated. You are very knowledgeable about a lot and whatever you may not know at the time you will go out and learn everything there is to know about that particular subject in a week. You are a serious self motivator and you are highly intelligent. you are the kid in the class that has an IQ off the chart and always knows more than the teacher. Your type of person has no need for college because you would be board with the slow learning process. Comparing you with the general public that just graduated is not even remotely fair. And the real world work experience that you bring to the table??? Thats like comparing apples and pancakes.

This is how i would sum up this post; My daughter will go to college. She will get her advance degree. Why???? What if she is not a self motivator? She will have the skills to be a good employees at a good salery.

And if she is a self motivator and has an advance degree she will be that much more formidable when going out to do what she wants to do.

what if shed rather start her own thing or whatever? would you push her and be mad when shes not really interested in going to college?

its sad when I see parents go all gung ho on their kids and trying to get them into colleges just so they can brag to friends where their son is at

bottom line is most people if they really decide to really achieve something they can learn it and make it happen, but most people are too busy listening to their negative fucktard in some cases jealous people around them too

College is pure bullshit and a total waste of time. it teaches you to think like everyone else. alot of these college kids think they are owed something in life.

they all talk like this "my degree pays really well so its worth it"

WRONG your degree does not pay you shit and just because you have a piece of paper you havent earned shit.

i would rather work with someone who has real business expierience and drive then some college kid with richy rich parents who is used to being coddled.

college is a waste of time and the smart kids are figuring this out. the most successful people i know never went to college. what a waste of 4 years.
