Tom Watson will end the argument that golf is a sport?

dude is two months away from his 60th birthday and leading the British Open against the best golfers in the world.

somehow I don't think if you put Joe Namath under center for the NY Jets today it would be a pretty sight.

Apples and oranges.

First, Joe Namath is 66. Yeah only 6 years but still.

Second, golf isn't a contact sport. Nobody ever sacked Watson.

Third, golf is an individual sport. Any golfer can have a great round/weekend/tournament.

Forth, Watson will hand anyone on this board their ass on any given day in a round of golf. The guy is no slouch. Old yes...a hack?...not.

Fifth, Joe Namath is a momo...

Sixth, who cares? It's fun and gets me away from this fucking computer.

depends on your definition and criteria for what is a sport.

takes great skill and dexterity and hand/eye coordination to be a brain surgeon - is a brain surgeon an athlete?

No because the following reasons:

1. they are not competing against many other people to win a battle he is trying to save a persons life.

2. a brain surgeon is not being watched by millions of people on the television.

3. a brain surgeon does not face the weather or atmosphere.

4. a brain surgeon is not affected by weather.

and fuck knows how many other reasons.

I thought it was obvious that my last post was in jest, but apparently not.

I'm pretty sure that a brain surgeon is not exercising nor competing in a contest during surgery, so he's probably not an athlete. A race care driver is probably exhibiting physical agility and stamina during a contest, so according to the definition provided by Random House Dictionary - he or she is probably an athlete.

so somebody who skis or rock climbs is not doing a sport because he's not competing against many other people - just competing against himself.

two people playing tennis on a private court aren't doing sports because there aren't any television cameras.

Lebron James plays basketball in an indoor arena, not facing weather or atmosphere.

Having done all three extensively, I consider them all sports.

Good point, but is he being scored in any way? most sport rely on scores to decide the winner right?

But anyway,

Any game or activity which envolves physical actions and scoring or timing a person or group against eachover I would consider a sport.

darts, golf, curling, running, football, american football, rugby, baseball, hockey, etc..

The only place I get lost is quizes and such things like that. wouldn't they are sports to?

i'm just asking! it's a debate that's being going on as long as i've been alive - are golf and auto racing sports.

i posted because I know that having a 60 year old winning or even just leading a major golf championship after 3 rounds will have this being debated all over sports radio this week.

it all depends on what your definition of a sport and what an athlete is.

some people believe that if a certain sport doesn't require a high level of physical fitness that it isn't a sport - i.e. bowling, golf, darts

If we're all going to define words according to our own personal belief system, why bother with written or spoken language at all? Under any definition I've read, golfers are athletes. Below are the definitions of athlete by two respected dictionaries, what criteria do golfers (or curlers, rock climbers, or skiiers for that matter) fail to meet?

Random House Dictionary:

ath⋅lete  [ath-leet]

"a person trained or gifted in exercises or contests involving physical agility, stamina, or strength; a participant in a sport, exercise, or game requiring physical skill."

American Heritage Dictionary:

ath·lete (āth'lēt')

"a person possessing the natural or acquired traits, such as strength, agility, and endurance, that are necessary for physical exercise or sports, especially those performed in competitive contexts."

I have always thought that golf was more a skilled activity than a sport.

Sports are competitions, they come in all sorts of forms. You can question the athleticism of golfers and baseball pitchers or David Ortiz, compared to that of Lebron or Sidney Crosby, etc but they're all playing a sport

Ahh so because *you* don't like it, it can't be a sport?

Or let me guess, grab some retarded shaved monkey on steroids and get him to run really fast wit ha ball until he is tackled. Then get up and do the same.

Is that your definition of a sport?

Jeez, a lot of people here have a strict definition of sport. Wiki's definition is IMO a good one: "Sport is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. Sports commonly refer to activities where the physical capabilities of the competitor are the sole or primary determinant of the outcome (winning or losing), but the term is also used to include activities such as mind sports (a common name for some card games and board games with little to no element of chance) and motor sports where mental acuity or equipment quality are major factors. Sport is commonly defined as an organized, competitive and skillful physical activity requiring commitment and fair play."

The only difference between golf and other active sports is that the amount of expertise and precision involved with about 1/2-2/3 of the game (chipping and putting) has little to do with the athleticism aspect of it. Bowling is similar - it's an athletic activity for sure, but someone could barely put the ball on the lane and throw strikes...the precision involved is clearly the forefront of it, and so as long as someone can remain consistent, they can do it well into old age (which is what kicks ass about bowling - even 90+ year olds can do well at bowling). No one ever argues that baseball is a sport but there's been guys play in the pros into their late 40s.

I can certainly see why some people might view things like bowling, curling, darts and billiards as not being sports but what's so bad about considering them sports anyways? Sports are more about the competitive nature than they are the activity. People who dog curling need to sit down, maybe look at the rules of it first if they aren't sure what it's about, and watch it sometime...it's basically the chess of the Olympics. People think the sweeping and yelling make it goofy but it's all about precision and the best at it are pretty damn good. The last winter Olympics was the first time I really sat down and watched it and I'm glad I did. Speaking of which, even though chess isn't in the Olympics, the IOC actually recognizes it as a sport.

Now thats a tough one!

In my mind golf is definately a sport not only because of the skill an strength needed, but also the endurance of spending 4 days of walking around the course in all types of weather plus then having to have the mental strength to keep you going through-out the tournement.
