Dot-xxx and Child Protection: Bullshit

This is part one of ?What?s Wrong with Dot-xxx,? a five-part series outlining the Free Speech Coalition?s assessment of the proposed adult-entertainment-specific sponsored Top Level Domain.

By Diane Duke

YNOT ? The adult entertainment industry certainly is no stranger to the use of ?child protection? as a pretext to impose unnecessary regulations while engaging in direct attacks on the civil liberties of its members. But governments are not the only serial abusers of this hypocritical tactic. ICM Registry also uses ?child protection? as one of the fundamental reasons why a dot-xxx sTLD is needed. The registrar-hopeful even used the specter of child protection in its application [to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers] when it made the vague promise to ?support the development of tools and programs to protect vulnerable members of the community.?

More at YNOT...

------------------------------

Great reading here... hoping we'll see all the tons of .xxx supporters with kids' best interests in mind chiming in!

Right now, the public comment period has ended again, but you can always email [email protected], you can post to their twitter account @ICANN and it's always a good idea to comment on blog posts, news articles etc about the .xxx tld.

Simply stating that you are a part of the adult industry and that you do not want the .xxx can already make a big difference.

to make life easy:

@ICANN I am an adult webmaster and I do NOT want the .xxx tld.

@ICANN I am an adult webmaster and I don't want the .xxx tld.

@ICANN The adult industry does NOT want the .xxx tld.

@ICANN The adult industry is opposed to the ICM's xxx proposal.

@ICANN #icann NO to the .xxx tld.

@ICANN #icann the ICM is not part of the adult industry.

@ICANN #icann The ICM does not represent the adult industry.

@ICANN The adult industry does not trust the ICM and does not want the .xxx tld.

@ICANN I am an adult content producer and I do NOT want the .xxx tld.

@ICANN I host adult websites and I do not want the .xxx tld.

@ICANN There is no support for the .XXX TLD in the adult industry.

@ICANN the ICMs .xxx tld will lead to #censorship

@ICANN I run adult websites and I say NO to the .xxx tld.

Please allow me to write PART TWO for What’s Wrong with Dot-xxx:

Everyone is trying to line their pockets.

If everyone was so against it, it would not have made it this far. We're being played.

Yeah... that's totally going to kill the image of the adult industry as respectful, courteous, honest and professional that is currently embedded in the mind of the public at large. ;-)

I would be very interested in them explaining in detail how this domain would protect children. The only thing it could theoretically prevent would be minors accessing adult content and that would only work if ISPS's blocked all .xxx domains and the government requiring the use of .xxx for all adult companies. They wouldn't be protecting anything that I can see

Maybe she could write another letter. I'm sure one more would change the minds of everyone who is standing to make a small fortune off of .XXX.

Can we get a list of people / companies who either support, have supported in the past, or won't take a stance on .XXX?

I have one, too, actually: IMO, anybody who seriously thinks that the presence (or lack thereof) of the word "bullshit" in Diane's commentary is going to have a discernible impact on the eventual disposition of the ICANN board towards .XXX, or on the public's general perception of the adult industry, is greatly overestimating the extent to which the ICANN board and the general public are offended by the word "bullshit."

Within the context of an industry that routinely puts out interracial flicks with titles like "My Daughter is Fucking a hahahahahaha" and/or Asian bondage titles like "Slope on a Rope" concern over use of a word like "bullshit" in this context seems overblown to me, that's all.

Just my perspective, which I'm entitled to, just as Farrel is entitled to his. No drama here. ;-)

their point is: because they are the registrar they can turn off domains that break their rules. unlike a .com or other TLD that cannot be turned off that easily

and because of that there will be no copyright violations, content theft or child pornography on .xxx domains...

No, in large part because ICM refuses to identify their supporters in any meaningful way, and the vast, vast majority of those supporters don't appear to be in any hurry to definitively identify themselves. The expressions of support posted during the public comment periods are generally not accompanied by any sort of identifying information that can be confirmed.

Frankly, if supporters of .XXX are for it only because they believe they stand to make money off of it, that rationale makes more sense to me than any of the others I've heard as reasons why it should be supported. It's still a belief that is difficult for me to fathom, though, since the IFFOR "best practices" that will set the rules for operating a .XXX site have not been published yet, so nobody -- not supporters of .XXX, not detractors of .XXX, not ICANN, not even Stuart Lawley -- knows what the rules of the .XXX road will be.

In Holland providers stopped working on a 'childporn' filter they announced today. They found out that there is less and less childporn on the open internet. Blocking won't help, removing it is better. Also childporn goes more and more underground and is spread in social networks instead of websites.

So the best thing to do is close facebook and other social communities.

If the adult community does not show up in force to the San Francisco ICANN meeting, you can be certain that this will get pushed through.

Stu is already planning big things for that meeting I am sure. If you can get to San Francisco then you should be there to voice the concerns you have.

Otherwise, here comes Stu.
